Highlights
  • Sham Shui Po District - VERY IMPORTANT: The ‘Tour Overview’ and ‘What to Expect’ sections above are NOT an accurate description of this tour. They have been written by VIATOR staff who have never been on this tour. We have repeatedly asked them to change the text to reflect this tour and they say they can not. The information written below, in the 5 stops is an accurate description of the tour. It has been written by us, Hello Hong Kong Tours, the tour operator. You may also refer to our website for accurate information about this tour.

Private Kowloon tours can be booked for any day of the week and can start at any time between 3 pm and 5 pm. Your night tour lasts 4 hours, 5 hours if you book the tour, and also require a hotel pick-up.

  • Sham Shui Po District - This is a tour about ‘The Dark Side’ of Hong Kong. We explore Kowloon discovering some of the ‘darker’ topics; poverty, triads, prostitution, grey markets.

Your tour starts in Sham Shi Po, the least affluent district in Hong Kong. Don’t come here for a fancy gourmet meal. Instead, come here if you want to try Michelin-recommended noodles and snacks that won’t make a dent in your pocket.

Here your local guide will take you on a street food tour to discover the best local eats and introduce you to the local culture and living environment.

We cover between 4 and 6 food stops on every tour. Tour itineraries and stops might differ depending on several factors such as your interests, the walking pace, and weather, etc. We try to include two Michelin-rated Bib Gourmand eats on every tour. (This is not a Michelin star food tour as Vaitor describes it - Viator refuses to remove that description even though we have told them it is misrepresenting our tour).

  • Mongkok - Moving on from Sham Shui Po we head to Mongkok, a district famous for its shopping, markets, and glimmering neon lights. One of the most densely populated parts of the world Mongkok is every amateur photographer’s dream.

You will explore the bustling streets of Mong Kok with your tour guide, taking in the famous Goldfish Market and electronics streets. We will explain what is going on inside the masses of high-rise buildings surrounding the markets. Prostitution, illegal gambling, and subdivided living are all rife. This is your insight into the ‘dark side’ of Hong Kong. But don’t worry, there is nothing dangerous about our exploration, Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world and Mong Kok is one of its top tourist destinations; you’re just getting the inside scoop on what lies beneath the surface!

** We may pass through different markets in Mongkok depending on your interests, the walking pace, the weather, etc

  • Chung King Mansion - From the gritty and frantic streets of Mong Kok, we make our way to the more glamorous district of Tsim Sha Tsui on the peninsula of Kowloon.

Chung King Mansions launched as a beacon of prosperity in the jet-set era of Hong Kong. The building’s fame slid into notoriety soon after, and it has lived for 60 years in the spotlight. Many Hong Kong people avoid it, given its reputed sleazy underbelly. A social scientist wrote a book about the building after conducting a 3-year study on it and the thousands of people that pass through it every day. We will talk about the building and its fascinating story.

Tour itineraries and stops might differ depending on several factors such as your interests, the walking pace, and weather, etc.

  • The Peninsula Hong Kong - The Peninsula Hong Kong — or ‘The Pen’ as it is known locally — is a Hong Kong landmark. A witness to the city’s eventful history, the hotel has been serving guests in style since 1928. This beautiful art deco building holds its own dark story which will be discussed.
  • Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade - Our tour ends at the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront which offers exceptional views of the Hong Kong skyline. Here we relax and discuss the history and development of the Hong Kong skyline from the early 1800s to the present day. Depending on the time of our tour you may be able to watch the Hong Kong light show which runs every day at 8 pm.

Just Do It! - Excellent food and cultural tour I would highly recommend. Mel was very knowledgeable about the food and history of the area. Having lived previously in HK I learned a lot of new information. The food was good and Mel was great company and easy to get along with. We booked directly with the company and communication with Mel was easy. The light show at the end was a great end to the tour. Thank you for a great experience.

Wonderful Kowloon Food and Culture Tour with Sinclair - Our private 4-hour night food tour with Sinclair was wonderful! He was waiting for us at the meeting place and we started off right away learning about the history and culture of Hong Kong while we walked to sample food. We had steamed rice noodles and fresh soy milk, beef omelet sandwiches and coffee/tea mix, various dim sum, and pastries. It was all very filling and delicious. Besides food tasting, we also visited a temple to learn more about Chinese religion, walked through Pei Ho Street market with live fish and shellfish, saw many open air fresh food and meat stalls, heard about the housing situation, and learned how to take the MTR to then explore the Temple Street Night Market. Sinclair was very knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic about sharing about Hong Kong. He brought us to his personal food favorites and we got to try some things we would have never found or tried on our own. He is an experienced guide, and he kept a good pace, explained well, answered all our questions, did all the ordering of food for us, and even shared personally about himself. He took group pictures during the tour and then airdropped and emailed the pictures at the end. He followed up with an email listing where we went and what we ate and also included information on more things to do in Hong Kong. We would recommend Sinclair and the Kowloon food tour!

Wonderful experience - Alex provided an excellent and comprehensive tour covering not only food but the history and culture of Hong Kong. No one left the tour hungry! We tried traditional and novel foods like stinky tofu. Alex made a great effort to accommodate dietary restrictions as well.

Wonderful and pleasant - The tour with Alex was wonderful. It was a great way to see parts of HK that are not typically tourist destinations, especially the local street establishments. Alex did a great job of explaining to us the living situation of locals in HK and let us understand the history of HK everywhere we went. Would definitely recommend this tour to those new and old to HK! Awesome food too!

An absolutely can't miss tour of HK - Our guide was Mel, a very patient man who knew the area perfectly and spoke excellent English. We've been to HK before, but Mel opened our eyes to the wonders that can be lying just off the beaten path or around the corner from the familiar. Besides showing us the best markets for shopping like Fok Wing market and Pekho Street market (no tourist trap markets like Temple Street, these are the real deal), we had an absolutely amazing time trying the local dishes that have won either a Michelin star or other awards for the best in the world. Our favorites included the rice rolls at Hop Yik Tai, and the dumplings made in front of you at Yuen Fong by a sweet old lady. I could go on and on, but you just have to experience it for yourself. Mel also told us about HK in general, opened our eyes to the culture and the struggles they face, and explained life from their point of view for different providences. It was a very, very enlightening tour and I recommend it to no end. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Incredible tour of of Kowloon from somebody who had all the insights! - We booked this tour as part of a birthday surprise for my husband, and ended up learning about the rich and often dark past of Kowloon. All of us have lived in HK for a number of years, so it was a real treat to embark on a walking tour of discovery in our home city. Mel was a great host who was thoughtful, engaging and very patient with all of our needs and we enjoyed great conversation from a seasoned local the entire time. I don’t want to give away any further details for anybody considering the tour themselves, but definitely a highly recommended activity in this period of limited travel abroad for those residing in HK, and certainly a must-do for future visitors! Thanks Mel for guiding us with such hospitality.

Great day with Mel! - We live in Hong Kong but decided to do this tour not being able to travel over summer due to COVID. It was great to be a tourist in our own city. Mel was a fantastic guide and explained so much that we didn’t know about the city. We also tried some delicious food spots we wouldn’t have found otherwise. Highly recommended - I’ve already suggested this to a number of friends also living in Hong Kong.
