Immerse yourself in traditional Korean culture with a Calligraphy Scroll Workshop in Insadong, Seoul. Learn about Korean papers, brushes, and ink and practice two different calligraphy styles. Create a personalized scroll with your own message as a souvenir of your travel in Seoul.

3rd fl, 55-1 Insadong-gil - In this workshop, participants will not only learn the art of beautiful writing but also experience the joy of using a calligraphy brush, creating a lasting memory of their travels—far more meaningful than a smartphone photo. This activity promotes relaxation and offers a glimpse into local Korean culture.

The instructor will explain Hangul, the reasons behind King Sejong’s invention of Korean consonants and vowels, and demonstrate the materials and their usage.

Participants will be introduced to two different styles in Hangul and will have time to practice lines, their names, and any notes they wish to write on their scrolls. This experience will deepen their understanding of Korea.

The program was also featured on Watcher, an American YouTube channel, in August 2024.

Additional Information

During this activity, your mind will relax and you may experience local culture in Korea.

I will explain to you about Korean papers, brushes and ink. You can practice by choosing one of two different calligraphy styles and you can also keep your practice papers with you if you want after the experience.

After practicing Hangul that you want to do over and over again, you will be ready to write your message on the scroll. You may take a stamp that I’ll prepare on your scroll if you prefer. I’m sure the Hangul calligraphy scroll will present your joyful memories. I look forward to including our experience in your travel in Seoul as a souvenir.

I suggest you write down your motto or a message for your family and friends. It is convenient to carry this scroll. Please visit my studio in Insa-dong If you are interested in Korean traditional culture.

Memorable and fun experience in South Korea! - My friends and I had a wonderful time learning Korean calligraphy! Helen is a fantastic teacher and very patient. She taught us consonants, vowels and how to write them. It was truly a fun experience as we got to create the phrase we individually chose for our scrolls and kept it! Not only was it a great experience, but we now have a souvenir that we will cherish from our trip. Thank you, Helen!

Created wall scrolls using traditional techniques - Excellent! What I really like about this class is you get to make something of real cultural significance under the guidance of an expert and keep it. We made a scroll with our chosen phrases written in Hangul. I think this is good for anyone who likes learn-by-doing experiences.

What a hidden gem, great experience for our family - learning and practicing our own calligraphy in Korean - Helen was exceptional in teaching my daughters and myself. She was patient, clear, and passionate about the subject topics. First, she went through on the slides the history of the Korean characters, showed some consonants, vowels and how they sounded. Also, discussed the proverb choices which we will write (calligraphy) later. Then we practice with writing our names with the brush, and then we get to choose proverbs of our own choice and we practice writing them in Korean characters (either Panbon style or modern style). Once we are ready, Helen will get us the actual scroll paper and we each wrote our own proverbs with the brush. It was a lovely experience. Now, we understand a little bit more of the Korean language thanks to this course. Thank you so much, Helen. We really enjoyed this special, unique experience and lesson. Oh, and the snacks and the tea were a nice touch, too!

Beautiful and authentic Korean experience - Calligrapher Kim was knowledgeable, warm, and very patient. Her skill in calligraphy was excellent and she helped us understand what we were doing. She showed me how to change the spacing and the size of the words depending on the meaning.

Great experience - Great experience to learn more about the Korean alphabet and calligraphy. It was very relaxing and mindful. The teacher was very patient and helped us practice until we were happy with our writing.

Authentic and Mindful Experience - Our family group of 3 enjoyed a wonderful evening learning a little bit about Korean calligraphy and its history as well as how to write our names and a short phrase of our choosing to transcribe onto a decorative scroll . A lovely souvenir to take home. Helen is a wonderful instructor and very passionate about her craft. Would highly recommend this activity.

Very authentic and memorable experience - It was a pleasure being taught Korean calligraphy by Jeongju. She is a very kind and patient teacher who really wants you to understand the history of the language. I recommend this activity just to meet JEONGJU KIM, a very nice person ! - Great experience! I was delighted to practice this type of artistic activity! JEONGJU KIM is a superb person, she is kind, warm, understanding and attentive! She even allowed me to come back the next day to rewrite the parchment that I lost in the metro! Relaxing & Rewarding Calligraphy - This calligraphy class with Helen is a wonderful way to spend a couple hours in Seoul. You learn about the South Korean language and its design in a chill studio. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was able to make a nice looking scroll. This experience fits in perfectly before a nice night out in Seoul.
