Sailing and Snorkeling: A Day on Bonaire’s Lady Bellaïs Schooner
Drawn by the allure of Bonaire’s vibrant marine life and the promise of a local culinary experience, I embarked on the Lady Bellaïs Snorkel Tour. Join me as I dive into the crystal-clear waters and savor the island’s flavors.
Setting Sail on the Lady Bellaïs
The Caribbean sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the turquoise waters as I made my way to the dock in Kralendijk. I had heard whispers of the Lady Bellaïs Snorkel Tour and its promise of a day filled with adventure, local flavors, and the kind of oceanic beauty that only Bonaire can offer. As a former professional surfer, the call of the sea is one I can never resist, and this family-owned schooner seemed like the perfect vessel to explore the vibrant underwater world.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the crew, their enthusiasm infectious as they shared stories of the island and the day’s itinerary. The Lady Bellaïs herself was a sight to behold—a beautifully maintained wooden schooner, spacious and inviting. With a capacity for 114, but only hosting 60-70 guests, it promised an intimate experience. As we set sail, the gentle sway of the boat and the refreshing sea breeze set the tone for a day of relaxation and exploration.
Snorkeling in Paradise
As we cruised towards our snorkeling destination, the crew regaled us with tales of Bonaire’s rich history and the vibrant marine life that awaited us. The anticipation built as we approached the mooring spot, a hidden gem on the north side of the island. With snorkel gear in hand, I plunged into the crystal-clear waters, immediately enveloped by a kaleidoscope of colors.
The coral reef was teeming with life—Angelfish, Parrotfish, and the occasional Ray glided gracefully through the water. It was a mesmerizing dance of nature, a reminder of the ocean’s boundless beauty. For those less confident in the water, the crew provided floating devices and guidance, ensuring everyone could enjoy the experience. As I swam alongside a curious sea turtle, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for moments like these, where the ocean’s wonders are laid bare for all to see.
A Taste of Bonaire
After our underwater adventure, we returned to the schooner, where the aroma of a home-cooked meal wafted through the air. The captain and his wife had prepared a feast—a local meat stew, rice, and homemade coleslaw. It was a culinary delight, a true taste of Bonaire that left everyone on board satisfied and eager for seconds.
As we sailed back towards Kralendijk, the crew kept the energy high with music and a rope swing that had everyone, myself included, laughing and splashing into the sea. The camaraderie on board was palpable, a testament to the crew’s dedication to creating a memorable experience for all. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I knew this was a day I would cherish—a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and the simple joys of island life.
