Bayon Temple - Bayon temple is renowned for its many impressive stone-carved faces. It’s worth spending an hour here. Nearby is Baphoun temple, so we make a quick stop to explore it as well.
Terrace of the Leper King - A bit further along, we visit the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, both located within the Angkor Thom area.
Angkor Wat - After a lunch break at a nearby restaurant, we proceed to the main highlight, Angkor Wat. This expansive complex may entice you to climb to the top, so plan for a longer visit.
Phnom Bakheng - Our final stop is Phnom Bakheng, where we join a large crowd at the summit of this ancient temple. Due to a limit on the number of visitors at the top, we need to arrive early and wait.
Cool Kulen Waterfall and the Giant Buddha
Central Market - We start our day at 8:30am, leaving Siem Reap for the long drive to Kulen Mountain, about 45km away. Bring a book or something to keep you entertained.
1000 Lingas - En route to Kulen, we stop at the river of 1000 lingas. If the river’s flow isn’t too strong, you can see numerous lingas carved into the stone riverbed.
Phnom Kulen National Park - Upon arrival at Phnom Kulen (meaning mountain of lychees), we head to the two waterfalls where guests can swim. Don’t be alarmed by the small fish that may nibble at your dead skin, similar to fish baths in town. This service is free at the waterfall.
Phnom Kulen National Park - From the waterfall, we trek a short distance to the Preah Ang Thom pagoda to view the giant reclining Buddha. While there, you might also receive a blessing of holy water.
Phnom Kulen National Park - After lunch on the mountain, we descend and head towards Banteay Srei, stopping along the way to see Sugar Palm production or alternatively, the landmine museum.
Banteay Srei - Banteay Srei is known by several names, including “Lady temple,” “Tiny temple,” and “Pink temple.” It stands out for its unique characteristics. Originally named Tribhuvanamahesvara, Banteay Srei means “citadel of the women” in modern terms.
Banteay Samre - We then visit Banteay Samre and Pre Rup temples before returning to the hotel around 6:30pm.
Angkor Sunrise and Grand Tour
Angkor Wat - We start early, leaving town by 5:00am to catch a beautiful and spiritual sunrise at Angkor Wat from a prime photo spot.
Central Market - After sunrise, we return to town for guests to enjoy their inclusive breakfast at the hotel.
Preah Khan - We head back to Angkor, stopping at Preah Khan (meaning “The sacred sword”), a large temple complex built in 1191 to commemorate the King’s victory over the Chams (the people of present-day Vietnam).
Neak Pean - Next, we visit a series of temples: Neak Pean, Ta Som, and East Mebon, which are located close to each other along the road. Neak Pean is an artificial island with a Buddhist temple on a circular island in Jayatataka Baray. After visiting these temples, we take a break for a local lunch.
Ta Prohm - After lunch, we continue to Ta Nei, Ta Phrom, and Banteay Kdei temples. Ta Phrom is famous for the ancient trees whose roots have intertwined with the temple’s masonry. This temple gained fame from the Tomb Raider movie starring Angelina Jolie. We return to town around 3pm.
Beng Mealea and Tonle Sap
Siem Reap Shuttle Tours - Starting at 8:30am, we head directly to Kor Ker, about 117km away. Settle in with a book for the long drive.
Koh Ker Temple - This remote, relatively unexplored area has no towns and only a small village in a cleared forest nearby. Koh Ker was once an ancient capital of Cambodia, located on the Chhork Koki highland. Built by King Jayavaraman IV (AD 928-942), Koh Ker temple stands 35 meters high and resembles a seven-stepped stupa. It was dedicated to Treypuvanesvara, the god of happiness. So far, 96 temples have been discovered around Koh Ker.
Beng Mealea - After visiting Koh Ker, we have a meal and then head back towards town, stopping at the ruins of Beng Mealea temple, a Hindu temple. Beng Mealea remains largely unrestored, with trees and thick brush thriving among its towers and courtyards, and many stones lying in heaps. It was once unpopular due to its difficult access (poor roads) and its distance of 77 km from Siem Reap. After exploring Beng Mealea, we settle in for the long drive back to town, arriving around 6:30pm.
Tonle Sap and Downtown
Tonle Sap Lake - This tour starts at 8:30am and lasts about 10 hours. We head directly to the floating village at Tonle Sap, about 30km from town, where guests take a motorized boat tour around the floating villages to witness a unique way of life. After lunch, we return to town, stopping at Phsar Leur, the old market, and Artisans d’Angkor. We drop guests off at their hotel around 5:00pm.
