Temples of Angkor with Sunrise
Angkor Wat - The tour begins with a pre-dawn departure from the hotel to witness the sunrise at Angkor Wat. Enter the magnificent temple in darkness (a torch is recommended) from the less-visited eastern side, and walk through ancient cloistered corridors past the world’s longest stretch of bas-relief carvings. Experience the dawn atmosphere at Angkor from the edge of one of the ancient library pools. The tour then explores the temple’s interior, spending two hours discovering the corridors, central chambers, and upper terraces of this remarkable temple. An expert local guide will explain the numerous stories behind the bas-relief carvings and provide insights into life during the peak of the Khmer empire.
Angkor Thom - The tour concludes at Angkor with breakfast outside the temple (breakfast not included) and a brief rest. The morning continues with a visit to the southern Gate of Angkor Thom, lined with 54 stone figures on each side - gods on the left and demons on the right - and the fortified city of Angkor Thom.
Bayon Temple - At ‘The Bayon’ (12th century), admire its beautifully crafted central towers adorned with over 200 large faces, then explore the famous Terrace of the Leper King and the Terrace of Elephants.
Ta Prohm Temple - After lunch and a rest, the tour proceeds to the jungle-covered Ta Prohm - one of the most atmospheric temples in Angkor. Once home to 2,740 monks, Ta Prohm remains much as it was in the early 1850s when French explorer Henri Mouhot ‘rediscovered’ this decaying site.
Banteay Srei Temple and Grand Circuit Tour
Pre Rup - The day begins with visits to the most fascinating temples outside Angkor Thom city. Departing the hotel around 8:00 am, the first stop is at Pre Rup, a Hindu temple built as the state temple of Khmer king Rajendravarman and dedicated in 961 or early 962. It is a temple mountain constructed of brick, laterite, and sandstone.
Banteay Srei - Continue the drive to the intricately carved and well-preserved Banteay Srei. The detailed reliefs on this smaller sandstone structure are considered the finest and most skillfully crafted in Cambodia. Banteay Srei has been accessible only since the late 1990s, after the Khmer Rouge left the area.
Neak Pean - On the return journey, visit Neak Pean temples, an artificial island with a Buddhist temple on a circular island in Jayatataka Baray.
Preah Khan - The afternoon continues at Preah Khan temple, a ruined yet highly atmospheric blend of tree roots and crumbling stone structures. Commissioned by the great ‘temple builder’ Jayavarman VII in honor of his father, a visit to this smaller site offers an interesting contrast to the more imposing Angkor Wat. Preah Khan is currently being restored by the World Monument Fund and is in remarkably good condition in some areas.
