Angkor Wat Small Circle and Sunset

Angkor Wat - Today, we will pick you up from your hotel at 8:00 am to visit Angkor Wat temple. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore local villages and the forest surrounding Angkor Wat. As the largest and best-preserved religious monument in the world, Angkor Wat is an architectural masterpiece of the Khmer Empire. Its perfect composition, balance, proportions, reliefs, and sculptures make it one of the finest monuments globally. Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple-mountain and the later galleried temple. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west, a detail that has sparked scholarly debate. The temple is admired for its grand and harmonious architecture, extensive bas-reliefs, and numerous devatas adorning its walls.

Angkor Thom - Angkor Thom was the fortified capital city of Cambodia during the Empire era. Originally named Yashodarapura by King Yasorvarman I, Angkor Thom means “great city.” It features numerous Hindu and Buddhist sanctuaries, including the royal palace and the Bayon temple with its smiling faces. The city is accessed through gigantic tower gates and statues of demons and gods.

Bayon Temple - Located in the center of Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple was built by King Jayavarman VII and dedicated to Lord Lokesvara, a savior god in Mahayana Buddhism. Bayon is known for its 49 towers, each adorned with four smiling faces, earning it the nickname “The Most Beautiful Smiling Faces Temple.” These faces represent the four main directions and are dedicated to various deities and the four precepts of the Main Buddha: Lovingkindness, Compassion, Joy, and Sincerity. Some scholars believe Bayon was a stone map of Cambodia, representing the 54 main states of the time.

Baphuon Temple - Baphuon is an impressive Hindu monument built by King Udiyatidyavarman II between 1050 and 1066, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Symbolizing Mount Meru, the temple is a great pyramid within the Angkor Thom complex. Its charming sandstone structure is connected to the main entrance by a raised walkway, making it a major attraction in the region. The top platform offers excellent views of the surrounding jungle and landscape.

Terrace of the Elephants - The Elephant Terrace is a beautiful royal conference hall located in front of the royal palace of the Angkor Empire King. Elephants were used to transport kings, the royal family, and generals, as well as to move sandstone from quarries to build temples in Angkor city. Here, you can admire sculptures of elephants depicting their activities on the walls.

Ta Prohm - Ta Prohm is the most popular jungle temple in Cambodia, famously featured in the movie “The Tomb Raider.” Built by King Jayavarman VII in 1186 and dedicated to his mother, the temple is known for its trees and roots intertwining with the ruins. The best times to visit are early morning and late afternoon to avoid crowds. Ta Prohm also served as a royal university of Buddhism, with 18 high priests, 2,523 teachers, and 615 dancers.

Pre Rup - Pre Rup is a large brick stone temple built as the state temple of King Rajendravarman II in 961 A.D., dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name “Pre Rup” means “turning the body,” reflecting the belief that funerals were conducted here with the ashes of the deceased being ritually rotated. The temple is highly recommended for visitors.

Phnom Bakheng - Phnom Bakheng is a major temple in the Angkor region, attracting thousands of tourists daily for its sunset views. It was the center of the ancient capital city of the Khmer Empire before Angkor Thom. Built by King Yasovarman, the temple offers stunning views of Angkor and the surrounding villages and farms. After your visit, we will transfer you back to your hotel in Siem Reap city.

Phnom Kulen National Park and Beng Mealea Temple

Phnom Kulen National Park - Phnom Kulen is a sacred mountain in Cambodia, offering various attractions such as holy waterfalls, a reclining Buddha, a sacred river with a thousand Lingas, Srash Damrei, and Bat Cave. Known as “The Lychee Mountain,” Phnom Kulen is a national park and historical archaeological site. It holds significant symbolic importance as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire, where King Jayavarman II proclaimed himself as The God King and initiated The Devaraja Cult.

Beng Mealea - After visiting Phnom Kulen, we will continue to Prasat Beng Mealea, a popular remote jungle temple located about 66 km northeast of Siem Reap city. Beng Mealea remains in its original ruined condition, untouched by restoration projects. It was opened to visitors in the early 2000s after land mines were cleared. Built by King Suriyavarman II and completed by King Dharanindravarman II, the temple features piles of fallen stones and dark galleries, reminiscent of an “Indiana Jones” setting. Enjoy your visit, but exercise caution.
