• Angkor Wat - The tour starts with a pre-dawn departure between 4:30 to 4:40 am, depending on the time of year. A Tuk Tuk and guide will pick you up from your hotel for sunrise outside Angkor Wat or to enter the grand temple in darkness from the lesser-visited western side, and quietly walk along ancient cloistered corridors past the world’s longest stretch of bas-relief carvings (note: this can be done after sunrise).

Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Angkor, Cambodia, constructed for King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it has remained a significant religious center since its inception – initially Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, and later Buddhist. It is the world’s largest religious building and represents the pinnacle of high classical Khmer architecture.

• Angkor Thom South Gate - Angkor Thom, the capital city of the Khmer empire, was built at the end of the 12th century. Angkor Thom is located north of Angkor Wat, between West Baray and East Baray, and near Angkor Wat, Preah Khan, and Phnom Bakheng. The city is almost square, surrounded by 8-meter-high walls stretching over 12 kilometers, with five impressive gopura gates providing access. The name translates to “large city” or “great city.” King Jayavarman VII established Angkor Thom as the new capital of the Khmer Kingdom after expelling the Chams, who had destroyed the old capital, Yasodharapura. He fortified the city with a high wall, further enclosed by a 100-meter-wide moat.
• Bayon Temple - The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple in Angkor, Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman’s capital, Angkor Thom. A unique feature of the Bayon is the absence of an enclosing wall, though it is protected by the wall surrounding Angkor Thom. The Bayon’s basic plan consists of three levels. The first and second levels are square galleries with bas-reliefs, while a circular Central Sanctuary dominates the third level. Despite this seemingly simple plan, the Bayon’s layout is complex, with a maze of galleries, passages, and steps that make the levels almost indistinguishable, creating dim lighting, narrow walkways, and low ceilings. The temple is adorned with more than 200 smiling faces on its towers.
• Ta Prohm Temple - Ta Prohm’s state of ruin is a state of beauty, explored with delight and left with regret. Ta Prohm is located southwest of the East Mebon and east of Angkor Thom, with its outer enclosure near the corner of Banteay Kdei. It can be accessed by entering from the west and exiting from the east entrance. Tip: Ta Prohm is especially serene and beautiful in the early morning. A torch and a compass are useful for visiting this temple at all times. Built in the mid-12th to early 13th century (1186) by King Jayavarman VII, it was dedicated to the king’s mother (Buddhist) and reflects the Bayon style of art. Ta Prohm is among the largest monuments in the Angkor complex, with inscriptions indicating its size. The complex included 260 statues of gods, 39 towers with pinnacles, and 566 groups of residences. Ta Prohm consists of a series of long, low buildings on one level, enclosed by a rectangular laterite wall (600 by 1,000 meters, 1,959 by 3,281 feet). Only traces of the wall remain visible. The center of the monument is reached by a series of towers connected by passages, forming a ‘sacred way’ into the heart of the monument, with three square galleries enclosing the area.
