A wonderful evening - A wonderful evening. When we arrived, we were given a menu in French (our native language), a booklet about the Apsara dances and a lotus flower! The food was very good, the service attentive and the dances beautiful to watch.

An insight into Khmer culture - We booked tickets for this show through our hotel. We understand that it sometimes sells out. The package includes a meal (7.30 pm to 8.30 pm) followed by an hour's performance (8.30pm to 9.30 pm). The meal was good and the gave us the opportunity to chat to our neighbours but it is the performance itself that is the real draw. We watched five dances which gave us an insight into traditional Khmer culture. Some of the dancing was immediately recognisable from the carvings on the temples that we had seen the previous day. They were elegant and expressive. The dancers take years of training to reach this level af skill and artistry. We were honoured to have been able to have this glimpse into a cultural treasure of Cambodia. The music was very strange to Western ears but we got a sense of its subtlety. We'd highly recommend this show.

Don’t miss this “Dinner Show Theatre” in Siem Reap Cambodia! - We received a warm welcome to the Kanell Dinner show at 7 Makara Street in Siem Reap Cambodia. Our hosts were waiting with cool scented hand towels as we walked past welcoming dancers to our seats. A multi course dinner was served (cocktails not included) which included appetizers, soup, assorted local foods as an entree, and dessert. Live music played as we ate and a very professional set of dancers entertained us. The final set of apsara dancers was our favorite. Their precision was amazing. Their traditional dress was beautiful! At the end of the evening the host and chef came around to each table to see that we enjoyed dinner and the show. For a taste of Cambodia and its traditional dances, this is a stop worth making!

A setting that overshadowed the wonderful music and dance - Overall this was a very nice experience. The different dancing performances and the musiciens were wonderful, the food was also very good and nicely presented, and the setting was lovely in this wooden theatre. However, as much as having the meal while seeing the performances was a special experience, it also meant that the dancing felt more as a background event, less valued than the conversations people had over their meals. I felt as if this wonderful art couldn't be fully appreciated.

Worth a shot - Great show! Dinner was served prior to entertainment, so it’s pretty long. Seating can be uncomfortable if your back is to the stage, but it is also more comfortable than the photos…under the tables the floor has a drop so you are not sitting just on a flat surface. Would suggest an upgraded menu option. Would have enjoyed more if it wasn’t so long. Beautiful performance.

Not Worth The Trip - From my two week trip to Singapore, Malaysia, and Cambodia, this experience probably falls into the bottom three for me. While the costumes were very elaborate and beautiful, and the space itself looked very cool and had some great decorations, it did not have much else going for it. The dinner was quite underwhelming with the green mango and the shrimp salad tasting quite off for our entire family, the fried fish tasting what I imagine a very cheap fried fish to taste, and the chicken curry and rice were just alright. The desserts that they brought during a small break in the show were all quite not delicious as well, and they were typical Cambodian (Khmer) desserts but I had some in our hotels and on food tours but these just weren’t very good. The service was also nearly nonexistent with us having to wait around 10 minutes for the waitress to come to ask what we’re drinking (it’s quite a small space with quite a few waitresses) and they didn’t take our plates away until half of the show passed already and we had to ask them to do so. It is a prefix menu, but they did provide a children’s menu but you have to order that online beforehand. The show itself didn’t fare much better. The dances were quite repetitive and boring, and the music wasn’t much better. The breaks in between each dance were always different for no reason which did not help. It is a typical Cambodian dance (so I came in with an open mind), and while it was a unique experience and some of them were nice with some more action and cool choreography, three out of the five were very slow paced and uninteresting. The seats were also not very comfortable even though there were small pillows (as we sat on the floor), and overall it was quite confusing as they did not provide a booklet with the plot beforehand as they do in many other similar-type shows. This made the show even less interesting as you never know what’s going on besides a few basic details. Not only this, but since this experience is part of a five star hotel (but open to all), it’s quite expensive for what it is at $34 USD per person (many other similar shows with dinners are around $20 USD per person). This part didn’t affect me very much (but I’ll include it here just in case) but they did not have any WiFi. Overall, even though you may enter and think it all looks very nice with beautiful decorations, that’s all it is: an elegant facade for a very bland and overpriced experience.
