Wat Banan Temple - Ascend the 365 steps to witness the splendor of Wat Banan, a temple from the Angkor period perched atop a hill near the Sanker river. Banan is not often visited by tourists and you might find yourself the sole explorer, especially outside of Cambodian holidays.
-
Phnom Sampow - Atop Sam Puoy mountain, you’ll find a temple and three natural wells, known as Pkar Slar, Lo Khuon, and Ak So Pheak.
Visit the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau (also spelled Phnom Sampov), a site of historical sorrow that has regained its beauty. Ride a truck up the mountain’s steep slope to the entrance, then follow your guide down into the caves, where the somber past of these caverns will be recounted. Pause to take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below.
- Battambang Province - Experience one of the most iconic rail journeys in the world on the bamboo train. Departing from O Dambong on the east bank, 3.7km south of Battambang’s Old Stone Bridge, the train heads southeast to O Sra Lav. The ride lasts about half an hour, rattling over uneven tracks and high bridges left by the French. Each bamboo train, or norry in Khmer, is made up of a 3-meter-long wooden frame with bamboo slats and rides on two sets of wheels, with the rear set powered by a 6HP gasoline engine. It can carry 10 to 15 passengers or up to three tons of rice, reaching speeds of 25km/h. The ingenuity of this system lies in its simple solution to a common problem on single-track railways: how to allow two trains traveling in opposite directions to pass. The bamboo trains solve this by quickly dismantling one train to let the other by.
