  • Ancient City of Ephesus - After greeting, we will have 20 mins. Drive to Ephesus area. Ephesus (Rev. 2:1-7), major port city on the Aegean, was the commercial, political, and religious center of all of Asia Minor. After a lunatic completely burned the Temple of Diana (Artemis) on the night, that Alexander the Great was born in 356 B.C. The Ephesians worked for 120 years to complete a magnificent reconstructed temple, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The city became part of the Roman Empire in the second century B.C. As a Roman capital of Asia Minor, Ephesus boasted a population approaching 250,000 people. The Apostle Paul’s first visit to Ephesus was brief—during his second missionary tour (Acts 18:19-21). His second visit lasted about three years—during his third missionary tour (Acts 19:1 to 20:31). Luke’s account of the worship of Diana appears in Acts 19:34-35. The Great Theatre (stadium) mentioned in Acts 19:29-31 could seat 25,000 people. Walk the marble-paved street with grooves made by chariot wheels. See the Fountain of Trojan, the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre.Visit the Chapel of the Virgin Mary (Double Church), where the Third Ancient Council convened.
  • Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - The House of Virgin Mary is located on the Aladag Mountains 5 miles away from Ephesus. At the third Ecumenical Council on 431 AD in Ephesus, it was claimed that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D. After the discovery of the house, the Archbishop of Izmir declared there as a place of pilgrimage in 1892. On July 26, 1967, Pope Paul VI visited this place and prayed there.
  • The Basilica of Saint John - After Lunch break near Ephesus in a local restaurant we drive to St. John’s Basilica, it is believed that the evangelist St. John had spent his last years in the region around Ephesus and buried in the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill.

Amazing Biblical and cultural tour of Ephesus - The entire experience exceeded my expectations. From pickup at the port through a busy day to drop off, our guide and driver gave us one of the most informative and interesting historical tours I’ve had and also demonstrated incredible hospitality throughout. Clear signage at the port followed by a short walk to a private sprinter van. Quick drive out of town with lots of history and context, Turkey’s place in the world, history and context of Turkey as a stop in the Bible journey and also its modern aspirations and culture. Skipped the line at the house of the Virgin Mary. Walked Ephesus with a tremendous talk track from the guide, Melih. Melih knew the Bible, but he also knew the Quran and ancient history, and presented a very engaging Biblical narrative throughout. Ephesus was just amazing - very hard to comprehend all the history that took place there. From there, an amazing off-the-beaten-path lunch at a local co-op (say “Yes” if this is offered to you…) and tour of rug production. We had a chance to see the ruins of the church where the Apostle John was buried. Likewise amazing. Really cant say enough about Turkey, the people we met, our guide Melih in particular, or the tour. Highly, highly recommend.

Was SO MUCH MORE than we expected!!! - This tour was INCREDIBLE!!! Pinar our tour guide was so kind and SO informative! My mom had mobility (mild, bad knee) issues and so she made sure we had places to sit and also went the appropriate pace. We also received a great laminated card showing Paul’s journey and also the different letters to the different churches out of Revelation. She gave us time to read the letter to the Ephesians so we understood the culture and what the people were dealing with in the context of their culture. It was so eye opening and made the Bible come alive!! Our car was a beautiful air conditioned van with water and we saw House of Mary, the city of Ephesus, and John’s home and Basilica. We were also given options for local shopping experience. She also brought us to a local restaurant which was SO good!! Overall, it was an incredible day! We chose to go to a family owned ceramics shop where they showed you how they make pottery and it was beautiful! We had a Turkish coffee with the family and it was amazing! I would highly recommend Pinar for the Biblical Emphasis Tour! Ask for her you will not be disappointed! You can tell she loves what she does as a tour guide!
