St. Peter’s Catholic Church: After the Portuguese captured Melaka in 1511 and until it fell to the Dutch in 1641, Melaka was heavily influenced by the Roman Catholic Church. However, when the Calvinist Dutch took over, Catholic churches were destroyed, and practices were banned.
- A Famosa Fort - Porta De Santiago (A Famosa): The A’ Famosa fortress, with its 3-meter thick walls and 40-meter watchtower, played a crucial role in protecting the Portuguese from their enemies. It was the most renowned and symbolic fortress built by the Portuguese.
- St. Paul’s Hill & Church (Bukit St. Paul) - St. Paul’s Church: St. Paul’s Church was expanded to two stories in 1556 after the Archbishop of Goa in India handed it over to the Jesuits in 1548. Between 1567 and 1596, the Portuguese added gun turrets to the chapel, turning it into a fortress.
- Red Square (Dutch Square) - Red Square: The salmon-pink Dutch administrative buildings now house the Melaka Museum and other government offices.
- Stadthuys - Stadthuys and Christ Church, the oldest Dutch building: The Stadthuys was constructed between 1641 and 1660 on the ruins of a Portuguese fort. It is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East. This massive red building showcases typical Dutch colonial architecture, including substantial solid doors and louvered windows.
- Queen Victoria’s Fountain - Queen Victoria’s Fountain: This fountain was built to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
- Christ Church - Christ Church Melaka: An 18th-century Anglican church, it is the oldest functioning Protestant church in Malaysia.
- Melaka Clock Tower - Malacca Clock Tower: The Red Clock Tower, also known as Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower, is a 134-year-old landmark located in Dutch Square. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Melaka. The 50-foot tower was built in 1886 by Tan Jiak Kim, a Peranakan Chinese philanthropist, to fulfill his father Tan Beng Swee’s dream of having a clock tower in the heart of Melaka. Tan Jiak Kim constructed the clock tower at the Stadthuys building, where it would be most prominent.
