Sublime - Well, the experience began with stepping into a time-warp of a shop that looked remarkably like Grace Brothers, with Malaysia's equivalent of Mrs Slocombe holding court in the middle of the floor. We were ushered into the craft room and shown how batik patterns are imprinted on fabric, using a wax template, and then filled in with exotic colours. We chose our patterns and spent a couple of hours totally absorbed by the process of mixing colours, dabbing the fabric and watching the colours get drawn into the patterns. I enjoyed it so much that I forgot all my troubles, including how much this holiday was costing. This is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours, away from the busy streets of KL, and produce your very own piece of batik to take home. Mrs Slocombe was truly delightful and sent us on our way with big grins on our faces. I'm free!

Kids get together Batik session - Very kids friendly and patience staffs. Kids enjoy the batik draw and paint session, they learn about the traditional art and the process of decorating cloth using the block printing (cap) or hand-drawn (canting) techniques, or a combination of both. Must do activity when visit Malaysia

So much fun! - We started with a short informative tour to learn the steps and process and then we jumped into our design work. We were given the option of freely drawing our own patterns or selecting from pre-drawn traditional templates, which is the option we went with. From there we were given individual instructions and help with applying first the wax and then the paint to the fabric. Everything went super smooth, and they even let us work an extra hour longer than scheduled because we were enjoying the painting process so much. Be warned: if you wish to have a fully finished product to take home, they will need to keep your work overnight to finish drying and prepping it! This was not a problem for us, and they contacted us early the next morning to pick up our work. They were even matted them in cardstock frames!

You don’t have to be Leonardo! This is a fun creative activity - Fun and enjoyable activity with helpful and friendly staff. This is not a difficult technique to learn in a short workshop and it’s very rewarding to see a vibrant piece coming together as you apply the dyes. There were templates to work from or you could make your own designs, which we did. As we were leaving KL that evening, we did not have the option of leaving our paintings to be sealed and finished, so we made them knowing we would take them away dried but with the wax on them. Our instructor wrote out for me the directions for fixing them at home. Highly recommended as one of the pleasures of being in Malaysia and you also get to shop in the large batik gallery attached to the studio.

Amazing activity - I arrived there early and the staff were very helpful. I didn’t do a handkerchief but a one meter scarf. It was an amazing experience. My husband joined me in the activity. The staff were amazing and so helpful. Unfortunately we didn’t realise that we had to wait 3 days for the due to be fixed. We were leaving KL the next day. However the lovely ladies sorted out postage for us so it was sent to us at home in Scotland when it was ready. ( it was an extra charge but well worth it]. We enjoyed the experience so much my husband and I would not hesitate to go back and do another course. Thank you for a memorable activity. One we will treasure.

Great experience!! - This was such a great experience and a great end to my trip to Malaysia. I would strongly recommend this experience but keep in mind that if you wish to remove your wax for white outlines, you will need an extra day to do so. I took mine with wax as I was flying the day after. Everything you need is explained to you, the school use stencils so you will come away with a great piece. Strongly advise to try!
