Highlights
  • Semenggoh Nature Reserve - For over 20 years, the wardens here trained young orangutans, who had been orphaned or rescued from captivity, how to survive in the wild. The success of this programme has left the surrounding forest reserve with a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult orang utans, who are now breeding in the wild. The programme has been transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre, but Semenggoh is still home to its successful graduates, semi-wild orang utans and their babies. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but frequently come back to the Centre for a free meal. If it is the fruiting season in the forest, some or even all of them may not come to feed. This in itself is a good sign and another step on the way to full rehabilitation.

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is home to semi – wild orang utans where they are trained to fend for themselves in their natural surrounding. Some or even all the orang utans may not come to the centre to feed ( 0900hrs / 1500hrs ) especially if it is fruiting season in the forest.

Tour start and proceed for 20 minutes’ drive to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. The Centre is the biggest Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sarawak that established in 1975 as a sanctuary for the injured and orphaned Orang Utans. These animals are trained or re-trained to survive in their natural habitat. They learn how to forage for natural food and build nests in the trees. However there are few that will never re-learn their wild skills due to their long association with and resulting dependence on humans. Take a walk on the trails and try to spot semi-wild Orang Utans. There are feeding times scheduled every day at the feeding platform. However always bear in mind that the main aim of the Centre is to return these animals back into their habitat. Do not be disappointed if you do not see any roaming the jungles or coming back to feed as this means they are able to forage on their own and do not need human assistance.

Just Monkeyin Around with Orangutans - Amazing to see the orangutans so close! They jumped, swung, and slid down a wire like a zipline! Excellent for children and adults of all ages. Wheel chair accessible

Wesley shared a wonderful introduction to Semengghoh - We had a great visit to see the Semenggoh orangutans! Wesley was an excellent guide. Not only was he knowledgeable and friendly, but he also gave great advise about where to spend our time, which gave us the chance to observe some unusually active and interesting behaviors.

Really the experience of a lifetime. - Missed seeing any orangutans with morning rain. The park rangers were very professional and made the experience exceptional. Went back in the afternoon and was able to experience seeing a variety of eight different orangs.

Breathtaking to watch - We went on an afternoon tour. The tour guidexwas fantastic and informative. We discovered July is a great time to see the Orangutans due to no fruiting in the jungle and therefore they are more likely to come and seek out fruit the Reserve staff leave out for them. And then we saw them, wow so amazing. We saw the grandma, a mum and baby and 6 year old. They very fantastic to watch, it was breathtaking, I loved every minute. Definitely recommend this tour.

A definite must from Kuching - This was so much better than I had expected. In May there are not many fruits in the forest so the orang-utans will come down for the provided food. I was expecting a semi-zoo experience but these animals are semi-wild and really living in this area. They are now breeding in Semenggoh and we were lucky to see 2 mothers , each with their babies. We saw 8 animals in total. The rangers were very wary of the adults and ensured that all the viewers kept a good distance at safe angles. There is no set time for feeding anymore, food is put out if they make an appearance. It was amazing to watch a baby clinging to its mother as she climbed up the tree with 3 sweet potatoes in her mouth, some bananas in one hand and carrying a coconut in a foot! You need to register before you buy a ticket. You can do that arrival or online before. I would really recommend paying the little extra for the train as the walk was along a boring road in the sun for about half a mile

This trip is a must - Our guide Julien was brilliant. Although it’s advertised as a 2 hour trip he contacted us through WhatsApp to advise a pick up time from our hotel to make sure we actually got 2 hours at the Orangutan reserve. The information he imparted to us on the 40 minute journey both there and back was very informative. Once we got to the reserve he led us to the best places to stand and he was taking photos all the time we were there with the Orangutans in the back ground. We were very fortunate and got to see 5 orangutans in total on this trip. We thoroughly recommend this trip.

Awesome - Absolutely awesome what a fantastic thing to experience. I would recommend this trip to everyone. Only lasted an hour but would not have missed it for the world. And another point is we asked if there was a souvenir shop and was told no. This place is purely about the animals well done. Don’t sell fridge magnets or any other tourist stuff. What a pure delight

View in awe - Seeing these glorious creatures even though they have been attracted by artificial feeding but as the fruiting season had ended in the forest it is the next best thing

Unfortunate experience with tour guide - The park was beautiful and the animals were really special. I would have rated this much higher if our tour guide hadn't left us stranded at the top of the park and taken our tickets with him so the bus drivers wouldn't let us on. Eventually one of the drivers believed our story and took us back to the entrance.
