Having a friend - If there is one that I love about Ghanaians it’s how their personal resistance to strangers is dispelled the moment you smile and say hello. My guide from Bilson Tours Ghana, and his driver were awesome. Our engaging conversations along a dusty road, that’s being turned into a dual carriage way towards a lake created by a meteor, was entertaining and made the 90 minute journey fly by. The lake is breathtaking and the boat crossing serene. The local guide, Fred, shared his knowledge of the history of the lake and its deep meaning to the Ashanti people. Several hotels are discretely carved into the landscape respecting the forests natural beauty as well as private homes and local villages that dot the outer rim of the lake. The inhabitants include antelopes and monkeys as the locals plant whatever they need to eat. After the boat ride I was treated to some fried fish and manually ground pepper, tomatoes and onions and I had a go at grounding them myself. It was fascinating watching the mother chickens beat off the males in order to feed their chicks the fish heads I supplied. My guide treated me as a family member and protected me from those wishing to profit from a tourists naivety. Because the horse riding was closed for renovations my guide took me on a better tour, for me, one of the city of Kumasi. I highly recommend using Bilson Tours because with him you have more than a guide, you have a friend.

Be careful, terrible time management - Unfortunately, Bilson Tours was not organized. They schedule and book with The Green Ranch for horseback riding and a local crew for the boat tour (both respective groups seemed well-organized). We only received the boat tour and did not get lunch. The vehicle was not air-conditioned as advertised and did not have seatbelts with a travel time of 2 hours there. They told us to meet in Kumasi at 8:30am when we later found out the horseback riding was scheduled for 7:40am by the ranch. We arrived at 11am. This error was not realized until 2pm when we had waited around for the owner of the ranch who “was busy.” When we confronted Papa Yaw about this and requested to go back to Kumasi he again attempted to hide his inadequate scheduling and told us we needed to wait to ride until 4pm. He told us at the beginning of the trip we would return by 3pm. Overall it was a dismal experience and I am so thankful we did not prebook (called locally but found through trip advisor) and were able to barter for a lower rate even though paying $75 USD for this experience was an overcharge.
