Into the Depths of Prometheus Cave

The adventure began at the Kutaisi Airport, where my fiancée and I met our local guide, a seasoned expert in the Svaneti region. Our first stop was the Prometheus Cave in Kumistavi, a subterranean wonderland that promised to kick off our journey with a bang. As we descended into the depths, the air grew cooler, and the echoes of our footsteps bounced off the ancient walls. The cave, discovered in 1984, is a labyrinth of underground rivers and lakes, stretching 1.8 kilometers and lying 40 meters below sea level.

Walking through the Argonauts Hall, Kolkheti Hall, and Medea Hall, I felt like an explorer uncovering the secrets of a lost world. The stalactites and stalagmites formed otherworldly shapes, and the play of light and shadow created a mystical atmosphere. The highlight was the boat ride on the underground river Kumi, a surreal experience that left us in awe of nature’s artistry. This was just the beginning, and I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, eager for what lay ahead.

The Majestic Views of Mazeri

After a hearty lunch in Zugdidi, where we indulged in the rich flavors of Megrelian cuisine, we made our way to Mazeri. Nestled in the heart of Svaneti, Mazeri is a picturesque village surrounded by wide meadows and breathtaking views of Mount Ushba. The air was crisp, and the landscape was a vibrant tapestry of greens and blues.

Our hike to the Shdugra waterfall and Ushba Glacier was a test of endurance and spirit. The trail was challenging, but the reward was worth every step. The waterfall cascaded down with a thunderous roar, and the glacier stood as a testament to the raw power of nature. Standing there, I felt a sense of accomplishment and connection to the earth, a feeling that only such wild and untamed places can evoke.

The Timeless Beauty of Ushguli

The final leg of our journey took us to Ushguli, the highest populated area in Europe. The hike from Ifrali to Ushguli was a relatively short one, but the views were nothing short of spectacular. Ushguli is home to approximately 50 Svan towers, ancient structures that have stood the test of time. The sight of these towers against the backdrop of Shkara, the highest mountain in Georgia, was a scene straight out of a fairy tale.

As we wandered through the village, I couldn’t help but marvel at the resilience and spirit of the people who call this remote place home. The journey back to Mestia was filled with reflections on the incredible landscapes and experiences we had encountered.
