Highlights
  • Kinkakuji Temple - is a world heritage site built in the 14th century by shogun Yoshimitsu—one of Kyoto’s most popular sightseeing spots. The building itself is the second one built 70 years ago, but the whole view of Kinugasayama Mountain behind it still retains the original image. Its landscape garden is a typical example of Japan’s borrowed garden. During your stay, you will come to know about various attractions and its mystery.

  • Nijō Castle - is one of the 16 World Heritage Sites in Kyoto. It was built 400 years ago by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. As there is no original palace except NIjho Castle, Its value is historically and architecturally priceless. In addition, gorgeous wall paintings and its lord garden attract your attention. It is like a living museum, indeed. In this visit, you come to know about Shogun Ieyasu’s intention of building the palace.

  • Ryoanji Temple - is also a world heritage site in Kyoto, internationally famous for its dry garden. The garden consists of white sand, moss, and 15 rocks. Through the visit to this temple, you will know why zen attracts people today and also understand why samurai supported zen. Another attraction is maple trees, which heal and relax people throughout the year.

  • Shoren-in Temple (Shoren-in Monzeki) - is the highlight of this tour. This is not a world heritage site, but it has enormous historical and cultural value. It’s no exaggeration to say that you cannot visit Kyoto without visiting Shorenin. Once you enter the temple, you will instantly notice the difference from other destinations. The essence of Kyoto and Japan is condensed here. This is the authentic Kyoto I’ll invite you to.

  • Gion Shirakawa - At the end of the tour, you walk along Shirakawa Riverside. Unlike Gion Shirakawa, it has much fewer visitors. The riverside with willow trees is quiet and serene. You can feel the atmosphere of the traditional townscape.

Additional Information

I love gardens. Japanese and English gardens are especially my favourite. It’s delightful to compare the differences in their sense of nature. An English garden designer in the 19th century wrote in her book, “There is something religious in Japanese gardens.” She was attracted to landscape gardens and dry gardens. The first diplomat from the UK travelled extensively to rural villages. There, he saw ideal English gardens. Kyoto still inherited the old Japan it used to be. Temples, shrines, and traditional architecture are also indispensable parts of Kyoto culture. It is special and unique, nowhere in Japan and across the world.
