Until the Meiji era (1868-1912), the shrine was called “Gion Shrine.” The famous town of Gion was the gateway to Yasaka Shrine, and the festival “Gion Matsuri” became Kyoto’s representative summer festival, greatly influencing the culture, customs and landscape of Kyoto. - Sanneizaka - Sanneizaka: This slope is part of the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and is said to have been used by Kitamasato, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Together with Niningsaka, it is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Kyoto City. The winding stone pavement and stone steps are flanked by old-fashioned buildings, and it is also known as the center of sightseeing in Kiyomizu. - Gion Shirakawa - Gion Shirakawa: The stone-paved streets lined with machiya (traditional townhouses) and a stream running nearby make this an ideal spot to enjoy the atmosphere of Kyoto at night. The scenery of shrines and stone pavement floating in the dim light of ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurants) is fantastic, and has been introduced on TV programs as one of Kyoto’s representative places.
