• Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace (Sento Gosho) - The expansive Kyoto Gosho was once the heart of the former government. Emperors, revered as divine descendants, were served by various clans and rulers who presented them with magnificent items. Today, visitors can still admire the enduring art and artifacts.
• Ginkakuji Temple - Named the Silver Pavilion during the Edo Period to contrast with the Gold Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), Ginkaku-ji became a Zen Rinzai School temple after its ruler’s death. Even after 500 years, it continues to embody Yoshimasa’s pursuit of beauty.
• Philosopher’s Walk - The Philosopher’s Path (哲学の道, Tetsugaku no Michi) is a charming stone walkway in Kyoto’s northern Higashiyama district. Lined with hundreds of cherry trees, the path follows a canal and becomes a popular hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot in early April. Spanning approximately two kilometers, it starts near Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) and ends in the Nanzenji neighborhood. The path is named after Nishida Kitaro, a renowned Japanese philosopher who meditated while walking this route to Kyoto University.
• Nanzen-ji Temple - The first sight at Nanzenji is its towering Sanmon entrance gate, built in 1628 by the Tokugawa clan to honor soldiers who perished in the 1615 siege of Osaka Castle.
• Kiyomizu-dera Temple - Kiyomizudera (清水寺, meaning “Pure Water Temple”) is one of Japan’s most esteemed temples. Established in 780 near the Otowa Waterfall in Kyoto’s eastern wooded hills.
• Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine - Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大社, Fushimi Inari Taisha) is a significant Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto, renowned for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that form a network of trails leading into the sacred Mount Inari’s forest. Standing at 233 meters, Mount Inari is part of the shrine grounds. Dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, the shrine features numerous fox statues, believed to be Inari’s messengers. Fushimi Inari Shrine’s origins date back to before Kyoto became the capital in 794.
