- Hanamikoji-dori - In the heart of Gion, Hanamikoji Street runs for just over a kilometer between Sanjo Avenue and Kennin-ji Temple. The machiya lining proudly along this small cobbled road are wonderfully preserved treasures. Behind the facades, protected from outside gazes by kimusuko (wooden trellises) and from the weather by inuyarai (curved bamboo barriers), hide ochaya (tea houses) and high-end restaurants
- Yasaka Shrine - Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社, Yasaka Jinja), also known as Gion Shrine, is one of the most famous shrines in Kyoto. Founded over 1350 years ago, the shrine is located between the popular Gion and Higashiyama districts and is often visited by tourists walking between the two.
-
Gion Shirakawa - The Shirakawa River is one of Kyoto’s main rivers and flows from the Heian Shrine all the way to northern Gion.
Sitting a mere five-minute walk from the keihan Gion Shijo Station, the street of Shirakawa Minami is maybe the best place in Kyoto to see the city’s magnificent traditional machiya townhouses as they sit right on the edge of the tranquil little canal.
