Highlights
  • Bamboo Forest Street - The Kyoto Bamboo Forest, also known as the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, is located in the Arashiyama district on the outskirts of Kyoto. This area has been a popular destination since the Heian Period (794-1185), when nobles would visit to enjoy its natural beauty. It is one of Japan’s most iconic natural sights, renowned for its towering bamboo stalks that sway gently in the wind, creating a serene and ethereal atmosphere.
  • Kinkakuji Temple - Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is a famous Zen Buddhist temple officially named Rokuon-ji. The temple is renowned for its top two floors, which are completely covered in gold leaf. Built in 1397 as a retirement villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was converted into a Zen temple after his death. The temple has been burned down several times throughout history, with the current structure dating back to 1955 after a reconstruction following a fire set by a monk in 1950.

Founded in 778, it is one of the oldest temples in Kyoto. Originally associated with the Hosso sect of Japanese Buddhism, it became independent in 1965. The name Kiyomizu-dera means Pure Water Temple, derived from the Otowa Waterfall that runs through the temple grounds.
  • Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine - Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is one of the most significant and well-known Shinto shrines in Japan. Located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, it is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, fertility, and agriculture. The shrine is famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates, which create mesmerizing tunnels along the pathways leading up Mount Inari. These gates, known as Senbon Torii or thousands of gates, are donated by individuals and businesses seeking favor and blessings.
  • Gion - Gion is a historic district in Kyoto, Japan, known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, teahouses, and its association with geisha culture.
  • Ginkakuji Temple - Ginkakuji, also known as the Silver Pavilion, is a famous Zen temple in Kyoto, Japan. Originally constructed in 1482 as a retirement villa for Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, it was converted into a Zen temple after his death.

Highly recommended - Waqar was very helpful and informative. She was able to provide insight not only into the history of Kyoto, but also into the daily life of modern residents. He was able to help us understand how to get around in Kyoto as well as understand the different areas of the city. He showed us several interesting places we would not have found on our own. Learning about the various customs at each temple as well as insight into Geisha life was worth the price on its own. His communication style and willingness to go above and beyond were a great way to start our time in Kyoto.
