Try this out! - The guide for this tour was Takuma Goda. He is a very nice and polite person. His English is easy to understand. He is knowledgable about Kyoto culture - he answered all the question of our gruop. Thanks to this experience I learned things that I couldn't do just by going to these places. You should definately give it a try!

A fascinating tour in geisha district in Kyoto - The tour takes place in one of the most characteristic and famous places of Kyoto: the Gion district, also known as geishas’ district, where some scenes of the film “Memoirs of a geisha” took place. The tour was quite fascinating and gave me a thorough understanding of the history of the area, with connections with Kyoto's, Japan's and other countries' history and culture. The tour started at the Yasaka Jinja Shrine, one of the oldest shrines of Kyoto, built before that Kyoto became the capital of Japan. It was amazing to see how many shrines associated with various gods and facets of life (such as cure from disease, love, commerce, wealth, beauty, etc.) are concentrated there. The tour continued through Gion, the well-known geisha district of Kyoto, taking also in less visited areas as well as some extremely fascinating locations that are easily missed. Tom added a wealth of historical and cultural information about places, people (especially geishas and maikos), objects, symbols, costumes and places, and showed continuities and transformations over time. He also satisfied my numerous curiosities. I really enjoyed this tour and would recommend it to people who wish to better understand Japanese culture and history, as well as the lives of geishas and maikos (both past and present). During the tour, if you are lucky as I was, you might also see geishas and maikos passing by while going to tea houses.

A fascinating journey through Gion's history and culture - I had a wonderful experience on the Gion Guided Walking Tour. The guide provided fascinating insights that I would have completely missed had I simply wandered through the streets on my own. It made the experience so much more meaningful to understand the history and stories behind what I was seeing. Roaming Gion without such context wouldn’t have been as enjoyable. Highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to truly appreciate the beauty and history of the area.

Authentic story of the Gion District - The life of geisha (or geiko) might be the one aspect of Kyoto that attracts most interest, but also suffers from the most misconceptions. With our amazing tour guide Tom we walked around the Yasaka Shrine and Gion District and learnt the true story behind the artistry and the popular image of geiko, as well as the challenges they face. If you decide to take this tour, be prepared to walk a lot and hear a lot of history - not the romanticized versions, as this tour does not focus on entertainment, but a detailed and authentic narrative. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who aspires for the thorough understanding of how hanamachi - if I am not mistaken in the use of this term - have existed and operated through the centuries. Also, if that is possible, could the future tours also include a visit to the craftsmen who create the attires and accessories for geiko? As Tom has told us, some of them are the last representatives of their craft, so I believe it would be a valuable experience to learn from them. I absolutely loved the tour. Thank you very much.

Kyoto Geisha District Walking Tour in Gion. - Our guide, Takuma, was incredibly cheerful, enthusiastic, and a pleasure to be around. We were lucky that the streets of Gion were quite tranquil during our visit, despite it being the evening. I picked up some fascinating insights about the shrine and Gion's entertainment scene. Although we didn’t encounter any geiko or maiko, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
