Terrific Local Cooking Experience - Cooking with Chela was a wonderful experience for our whole family. She involved everyone in the preparations and ensured that all the children had an opportunity to contribute. Not only did we have a lot of fun, but the food was delicious! It was a highlight of our trip to Costa Rica and we would highly recommend it.

Fun Cooking Class - One of the best things we did while on our vacation with family. They were all so kind and helpful. They let you pick what you want to cook and then they get the ingredients together and you start to cook the whole meal. Lots of fun and a great meal in the end. Just being able to cook on the fire stove was a great experience.

MUST DO Costa Rican Cooking class!! - This is a “must do” activity in Fortuna because it is more than just cooking!! Chela and her team were welcoming and efficient making it a fun evening for my husband and me and our adult son and his girlfriend. We also enjoyed talking with another couple. We made about eight dishes, and each one of them comes from Chela’s grandmother and she demonstrates traditional Costa Rican cooking styles over a wood-burning stove. She explained in depth the different ingredients she used and why, and we all got to participate in the chopping, cooking, and eating! I particularly enjoyed learning how to make empanada dough, fried plantains, and patacones (smashed fried plantains). We also made chicken, pork, and fish dishes and we had a lovely feast with a glass of wine or beer to celebrate at the end. Chela taught herself English and is passionate about teaching her community about how to work together to run businesses in a rural area and ensuring children at the local school are receiving quality education and also learning cooking and English skills. Both her story and her cooking class were inspirational and it is well worth the drive about 10 minutes outside of town to take part in this cultural activity. This is such a highlight of our trip!

Cooking with Chela and toddlers - Chela is the best! We cooked the most delicious food with her and our two toddlers. We brought toddler knives with us and she accommodated them and their desire to help so perfectly. Craving that pollo con arroz. Wish I had purchased her recipe book!

Culinary experience - While other tours/activities leave you a memory or two, this one gives you a life skill or allows you builds on what cooking skills you already have. I also leaned that this helps to support another program where local kids are thought how to cook, which I thought was very cool. As someone who has not generally been comfortable cooking much, but especially using oil to fry food, Chels worked with me to get through my discomfort. I had a great time, learned to cook some Costa Rican dishes and got to eat the results.

Authentic Costa Rican cooking - We had a very nice evening cooking class with Chela and her assistant. Our family, with 3 girls, really enjoyed getting the hands on cooking experience. The food turned out delicious. We learned a lot and have a much greater appreciation of Costa Rican food and culture. We love the fact that we are supporting a woman owned business in a small rural community while having a great time. Definitely would recommend for families with kids.
