Begin your journey to Kairouan from your accommodation in Tunis. The tour commences with a visit to the last two 9th-century Aghlabite Basins, renowned as some of the most impressive waterworks of the Middle Ages. These basins can be viewed from the top of the Tourist Information Building, offering an introduction to Kairouan’s foundation and its illustrious era. Continue to the 7th-century Great Okba Mosque, the oldest mosque in North Africa, where visitors will admire the powerful and beautiful expression of faith embodied in the 9th-century architecture. Next, visit the nearby Sidi Sahbi, a 17th-19th century building featuring a minaret and stunning courtyards adorned with green-blue tile work and white plaster stucco. Proceed to the entrance of the Medina for a guided walk through the main street of the mystical Medina up to “Bir Barrouta.” Enjoy free time for personal exploration and shopping in the Medina. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
Transfer to El Jem (70 km / 1h 15min drive). El Jem’s amphitheatre is the main highlight and is one of Tunisia’s most frequently visited attractions. This grand amphitheatre, constructed in the mid-3rd century AD (230-240 AD), is the largest Roman monument remaining in Africa and ranks third in the Empire after those in Rome and Verona. As one of the last large amphitheatres built during the Roman era, its architectural design is an enhancement over that of the Roman Coliseum, although it is not significantly smaller.
