Setting Sail on a Chiliboat

The sun was just beginning to rise over La Parguera as I arrived for my Chiliboats Waterbike Adventure. The air was crisp, and the promise of a day spent exploring the cays filled me with anticipation. As a marine biologist, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean, and the chance to explore the rich biodiversity of Puerto Rico’s waters was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

Our guide, Waldy, greeted us with a warm smile and a wealth of knowledge about the area. He explained the unique geological formations of the cays, which create a natural pool in the ocean. As we set off on our double chiliboat, I was struck by the ease of pedaling and steering. The catamaran-style waterbike was stable and comfortable, making it easy to navigate the crystal-clear waters.

Waldy provided us with life jackets and waterproof bags to keep our essentials dry. I took his advice and donned a hat and sunglasses to protect myself from the sun. As we pedaled towards the sun, the gentle breeze and the sound of the water lapping against the chiliboat created a calming rhythm that set the tone for the day.

Discovering the Cays

As we made our way through the cays, Waldy shared fascinating facts and history about the mangrove islands and the diverse marine life that calls this area home. We stopped to observe sea turtles gliding gracefully through the water, iguanas basking in the sun, and a variety of birds nesting in the mangroves. We had chosen to embark on our adventure on a Thursday morning, and the area was blissfully empty and peaceful. Waldy mentioned that the weekends tend to be busier, and I was grateful for the tranquility of our weekday excursion.
