La Paz, Sajama National Park, and the stunning Uyuni Salt Flats
(Nature / Culture)
Sajama National Park is home to geological marvels such as volcanoes, a variety of organisms, and thermal springs, alongside cultural treasures like ancient burial structures, cave paintings, and colonial architecture and art. Numerous geysers and hot springs are located about an hour’s walk from the village of Sajama.
Flora and fauna in the park must adapt to high altitudes with reduced oxygen levels, cold nighttime temperatures, frosts extending into spring, minimal shade or protection from the elements, and dry, arid conditions.
The Uyuni Salt Flat, situated nearly 12,000 feet above sea level, captivates with its optical illusions, resembling endless white hexagonal salt tiles. During winter (our summer), it is possible to drive across it. In summer (our winter), the Salar transforms into a vast mirror, reflecting the sky and clouds, creating the illusion of mirroring the entire world.
