Safety First...? - Pick up was late and kind of disorganized. The company communicated ahead via text and email, changing pick up time from 7 am to 640 am to 715 am, then arrived at 735 am. Our guide was Miguel. I found him caring, good with languages and patient. Others thought he was not good, but I had no issues with him. We were picked up, driven to a mall and then transferred to a bigger bus. We grabbed a seat then realized it was broken, it wasnt fully bolted to the floor. There was a lot of waiting and other tours were there. I almost ended up on the wrong bus. We finally got underway and drove to La Romana. We were let off and walked down a steep alleyway with stairs that came out at the boat. We had to board the neighbour boat, then climb over to our moto catamaran. It isn't a fancy one, and it's a moto catamaran - no sails. It was big water to "the wall" and loud Spanish pop music the whole way. Loud, with bad speakers. We nudged in with other boats and unloaded to snorkel. Water was rough and it wasn't what I was expecting. It isn't a vibrant, full-of-fish coral wall. It's still pretty, but not what I was expecting. It's flat seabed with coral and fish, but not busy with sealife. We had 1 hr to snorkel. I came back sooner and became very seasick from being anchored in rough water. I tried to take gravol but couldnt keep it down. There's no running water in the women's washroom, and I was SICK, close to passing out and vomiting. Miguel helped me to the back of the boat, and with cold water on my face and neck, and another guide put some stuff on my neck and massaged my shoulders and upper back. It helped a lot. There were other seasick passengers as well. Once on Catalina Island, I took gravol again and slept in the shade until it was time to go around 3 pm. I missed lunch but hubby had some and said it was decent. The catamaran cannot come to shore, you're taken in wooden boats with motors to and from shore. It is HOT. Bring an umbrella for shade. We were made to wear lifejackets TO Catalina island, but not back. The awful, loud Spanish pop music blared the whole way back, interrupted by phone calls to whatever phone had the playlist. As we got close to the mainland, we had to put our life jackets back on. We then got off the boat, went back up the alleyway and stairs and got on the bus to head to Altos de Chavon where we had 45 minutes to explore. It's shadier there than I expected and I enjoyed the cool breeze. I liked it better than I thought I would. We left there about 545 pm, and dropped some traveller's off in the middle of a highway intersection where a van was waiting for them. We were transferred to a smaller can that took us the test of the way to our resort and it was TERRIFYING. I've been on many tours, I know the locals drive fast and aggressively but this guy was insane. I was scared the entire time. He was SO aggressive with other drivers. We got back to our resort about 730 pm, thankful to he alive. Overall, if you've done Saona Island, you can skip Catalina Island in my opinion. Theyre bith gorgeous. Saona has calmer water. If you get motion sick (I don't usually), take non drowsy meds ahead of time. If you're not a strong swimmer, the snorkelling is difficult when it's rough. The company, Pleasant Tours, could benefit from being on time, more information, a newer boat, bettrr music, better bathroom facilities, more shade on board and ensuring drivers put safety first. The staff were all good, even the dour faced policeman who stayed for the entire trip, pistol on hip.
