Riding Rapids: A Surfer’s Adventure in Costa Rica’s Rainforest
When the waves called me inland, I found myself drawn to the thrill of whitewater rafting in Costa Rica’s Sarapiquí Rainforest. The promise of a new adventure at Hacienda Pozo Azul was too tempting to resist, and I was eager to trade my surfboard for a paddle.
A New Kind of Wave
As a professional surfer, I’m always on the lookout for the next big wave, but this time, I traded my surfboard for a paddle and ventured into the heart of Costa Rica’s Sarapiquí Rainforest. The Whitewater Rafting experience at Hacienda Pozo Azul promised a different kind of thrill, and I was eager to dive in.
The day started with a warm welcome from our guide, Steve, whose enthusiasm was infectious. He briefed us on the basics of rafting, and his clear instructions made even the most apprehensive among us feel at ease. As we set off on the Sarapiquí River, the lush greenery enveloped us, and the sound of the rushing water was music to my ears. It was a refreshing change from the ocean’s roar, yet equally exhilarating.
The river’s Class II and III rapids offered just the right amount of challenge, and Steve’s expert navigation ensured we stayed on course. As we paddled through the scenic river, I couldn’t help but marvel at the vibrant birdlife that flitted around us. It was a reminder of the rich biodiversity that Costa Rica is renowned for, and I felt grateful to be in the midst of it all.
A Journey Through Nature
The Sarapiquí River is known for its pristine waters, and as we glided along, I took a moment to dip my hand into the cool, refreshing water. It was a stark contrast to the salty waves I’m accustomed to, but it was a welcome change. The river’s gentle flow allowed us to take in the breathtaking surroundings, and I found myself lost in the beauty of the rainforest.
Alberto, our safety kayaker, was always nearby, capturing moments with his camera and ensuring our safety. His presence was reassuring, and I appreciated the extra layer of security he provided. As someone who spends a lot of time in the water, I know the importance of having a reliable backup, and Alberto was just that.
The camaraderie among our group of older travelers was heartwarming. We shared stories, laughter, and the occasional splash, and it reminded me of the sense of community that surfing often brings. It’s these connections that make adventures like this so memorable, and I was grateful to be a part of it.
A Farewell to Remember
As our rafting journey came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The experience had been both thrilling and rejuvenating, and I was already planning my next visit to Hacienda Pozo Azul. However, there was one thing I regretted – not having cash on hand to tip Steve for his exceptional guidance.
After we disembarked, Steve had to take the rafts further, and we didn’t get a chance to see him again. It was a reminder to always carry a little extra cash, even if it might get wet. Steve’s passion for his work was evident, and I wanted to show my appreciation for making our adventure unforgettable.
In the end, the Whitewater Rafting experience at Hacienda Pozo Azul was a refreshing detour from my usual surf escapades. It was a reminder that adventure comes in many forms, and sometimes, it’s the unexpected journeys that leave the most lasting impressions. Until next time, Costa Rica, keep those waves – and rapids – rolling!
