Highlights

Praia da Marinha - Nestled in Caramujeira, within the coastal area of Lagoa, Algarve, this beach is renowned for its stunning cliffs and exceptional water clarity, allowing for remarkable seabed visibility. Praia da Marinha is frequently featured in international advertisements and TV commercials.

Marina de Portimao - Situated at the mouth of the River Arade, Portimão is celebrated for its excellent sandy beaches with warm, calm waters, making it a highly attractive holiday spot.

Portimão boasts a rich fishing heritage, particularly flourishing between the 19th and 20th centuries with the rise of the canning industry and tourism. The historic center’s streets and squares are lined with buildings from this era, including the Portimão Museum, a beautifully renovated old cannery that won the Museum of the Year award from the Council of Europe in 2010. The museum honors the people and the city that have lived by and for the sea for centuries.

Don’t miss the simply designed Chapel of São José de Alcalar or the impressive Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception), built in the 15th century atop a hill and a prominent feature of the city’s skyline. Although it was severely damaged by the 1755 earthquake, it still retains its beautiful original Gothic portal. For a relaxing break, rest under the trees in the Manuel Bivar Garden and watch the fishing boats and pleasure craft sail by. Alternatively, stroll along the lively promenade beside the Marina, bustling both day and night.

Most waterfront restaurants, where you can savor grilled sardines, the local favorite, are located next to the docks. While sardines are enjoyed throughout the region and the country, they are especially famous in Portimão, which hosts a sardine festival in August. Other seafood specialties to try include clams, whelk bean stew, casseroles, and bouillabaisses. The region also offers broad beans, cornmeal (similar to polenta), and traditional almond- and fig-based sweets.

About 3 kilometers from the center, Praia da Rocha is perhaps the most famous beach in the Algarve, with its iconic vast stretch of sand known worldwide. A popular seaside resort since the early 20th century, it features a casino and numerous leisure activities. Historically, it held strategic importance in the 15th century, with the Fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar built to protect the harbor and population from pirate attacks, providing crossfire with the São João do Arade Fort in Ferragudo, near another extensive sandy beach called Praia Grande.

Today, the Praia da Rocha Fortress offers excellent views of the city, river, and sea, especially enchanting at sunset. From here, you can also see some of the beaches to the west, starting with Três Castelos Beach. These beaches, varying in size but always framed by jagged rocks, include Careanos, Vau, Barranco das Canas, João d’Arens, Prainha, and Três Irmãos. This sequence ends at the long sandy Praia do Alvor and its estuary, a lagoon area important for bird watching.

To fully appreciate Portimão, view it from all angles. Consider a boat trip along the coast to discover beaches inaccessible by land and admire the rock formations. Game fishing enthusiasts will find this an ideal destination, with the fertile sea teeming with large species like swordfish. For different scenery, travel up the River Arade estuary to Silves, passing through green hills and capturing a variety of memorable images.

Praia da Rocha - Located in the municipality of Portimão, Algarve (Portugal), this beach boasts a vast expanse of sand, covering 146,000 m² along 1.5 km of coastline. The 17th-century Santa Catarina Fortress stands next to the beach, built to defend the Arade river bar.

Lagos - Lagos is a town in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, known for its walled old town, cliffs, and Atlantic beaches. Wooden steps lead to the sandy cove of Camilo Beach, while the nearby Ponta da Piedade cliffs offer stunning headland views and a lighthouse. St. Anthony’s Church, an ornate 18th-century church, faces the Governors’ Castle, a castle with a baroque facade and towers.

Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse - The Ponta da Piedade headland features some of the Algarve’s most impressive natural scenery. This dramatic limestone coastline includes sea pillars, delicate rock arches, and hidden grottos, all sculpted by fierce winter storms. The headland’s beauty is revealed upon descending the cliffs, where the golden cliffs and turquoise sea create a stunning landscape.

Praia do Camilo - A small beach nestled between cliffs, featuring interesting rock formations and clear, calm waters. Access is via a long staircase.

Praia Dona Ana - One of the Algarve’s most picturesque beaches, Praia da Dona Ana is perfect for a beach day. Located south of Lagos within the limestone cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland, this beach offers a beautiful natural setting with golden strata cliffs, turquoise waters, and soft sands. It also provides all the amenities of a popular beach, including restaurants, shops, and showers.

Beautiful coast - This was a wonderful trip! The sights in Lagos were the best! It was a long day traveling from Lisbon but we really wanted to see the Algarve region. Our guide, George, was good. He recommended a wonderful family place for lunch that had the best selection of fresh fish! Would go again in a heartbeat!

Friendly and professional - Our guide was Mr.George. We had a great time going to Algarve, car ride with a one year old had its challenges but it was still a great trip . We enjoyed it so much that we asked to book a return trip back to Lisbon with George as well. He was accommodating and picked us up from the hotel at the time we requested. Even though the ride back was a straight drive and not a tour , George honored our request to see a place we wanted and also allowed us to try a brunch spot. On the way back baby was very fussy and George made a stop for us to take care of the baby. Over all I would book with them again if we ever come back! Thank you guys for everything!

Wonderful Experience - Our driver and tour guide of the day was Luis who was super welcoming and shared so many wonderful insights about Portugal on our way to Algarve. We had a great time sharing stories with Luis. In Portimao we were able to do the boat tour to see the caves including the Benagil cave. Along the way had some wonderful piri piri chicken for lunch and saw some of the beautiful beaches in Lagos. We were happy to have booked a private tour for this day trip especially with Luis as our guide.

Our Algrave and Lagos Trip in Late December - Our (Group of 6 People) Algarve and Lagos Tour with your guide Phillip on 12/27/2022 was really excellent. Phillip did make every effort to make our trip very enjoyable and covered as much as sites as was possible during the 8 hours period. In fact he did accommodate our request to help us picking up some lost documents from police station. I would recommend this service to our friends and family in future as well.

Algarve - Portimao and Lagos from Lisbon. - Our trip to Portimao and Lagos from Lisbon was very good. Our driver was time. The drive was long but the beautiful views along the way made up for it. First option was a boat ride. We want to see the caves. Later we found out they threw in an extra viewing the dolphins. Our rode in a dinghy/boat (several people) far out from the shore to see some dolphins. Luckily they were there, welcomed us and put up a show. It was so delightful to see so many of them frolicking around, in front, behind, at the side of our boat. We saw two types of dolphins. First the smaller ones, then at another location, the bigger ones. The weather was so good/ sunny and balmy. Took lots of videos of dolphins in their natural habitat. From there we went to see the caves of Algarve. Beautiful caves. Then we had lunch (in your own) at one of the good restos on a beach. There we tasted the best grilled sea bream and sea bass. From there drove to Lagos. Our driver took us to see the best view points of Lagos. It was very beautiful but it was also getting dark. So our photos were not as beautiful as expected even with the use of iPhone 14 ProMax. My only suggestion for improvement would be to do the view points of Lagos first as it doesn’t take a long time. I had seen photos of Lagos when it’s sunny and bright and wished I had the same.

Skip It - This tour consisted of 80% of our day sitting in a van driving to and from the destination. At our first destination it was so crowded that there was no place to park. After driving around the area several times we finally just asked our driver to take us to the next place. At that time, we were dropped off at a ticket booth where we were told we had to pay an additional 30 Euros/pp for a boat ride that we hadn’t signed up for. We asked our driver to just allow us to have lunch in the town as we were not going on the boat. We were then taken to see the cliffs, which were beautiful. Finally we were driven through a beach town to admire I guess the traffic and the people. We spent most of our day in the van and did not see what was listed on the itinerary. This trip did not live up to our expectations at all and was quite disappointing.

Bad experience with this operator - While the views were beautiful and the area wonderful I would not recommend the company Tripadvisor used for this tour. The tour guide was nearly impossible to get any straight answers out of on where we were going, what time we were expected back in Lisbon, etc. the tour was scheduled for 9 hours and it ended up taking 12 1/2 hours. We got back so late the restaurants were all closed in Lisbon and no one ate dinner. The trip also included a boat ride which we didn’t pay for until we arrived in the Algarve and the only choice the tour guide gave us was with a company he was obviously enjoying some extra compensation with for requiring us to use him. The boat ride company agent was a fast talking smart aleck who shouldn’t be associated with TripAdvisor. We have traveled for years and often use tour companies. Never again with TripAdvisor. Good luck if you decide to use this company.
