- Harappa Civilization - Harappa, pronounced in Punjabi, is an archaeological site situated in Punjab, Pakistan, approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles) west of Sahiwal. The Bronze Age Harappan civilization, more commonly referred to as the Indus Valley Civilization, derives its name from this site, which is named after a contemporary village near the former path of the Ravi River, now located eight kilometers (five miles) to the north. The heart of the Harappan civilization spanned a vast region, stretching from Gujarat in the south, through Sindh and Rajasthan, and reaching into Punjab and Haryana. Numerous sites have been discovered beyond the core area, including some as far east as Uttar Pradesh and as far west as Sutkagen-dor on the Makran coast of Balochistan, near Iran.
