The Bronze Age Harappan civilization, more commonly referred to as the Indus Valley Civilization, derives its name from this site, which is named after a contemporary village near the former path of the Ravi River, now located eight kilometers (five miles) to the north. The heart of the Harappan civilization spanned a vast region, stretching from Gujarat in the south, through Sindh and Rajasthan, and reaching into Punjab and Haryana.
