Highlights
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy - Depart your centrally located Nairobi hotel around 6am for a three-and-a-half-hour morning drive through lush tea and coffee estates.

This small group tour’s first stop is at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Established by an agreement between the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Jane Goodall Institute, Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary provides a lifelong refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees from West and Central Africa. The sanctuary currently has more than 30 resident chimpanzees in natural enclosures. During your visit, you’ll learn about the resident chimpanzees, and have a chance to spot them as the approach a feeding platform.

Next you’ll enjoy a game drive across the open plains of the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The reserve is home to reticulated giraffes, zebras, African elephants, cape buffalo, warthogs, lions, leopards, and many, many more, including over 500 bird species. Lunch (at your own expense) will be served at one of the lodges in the game sanctuary.

Afterward, you’ll head to visit a rhino homestead and a manyatta, a replica of a Kenyan traditional tribal homestead. There, you will have a chance to sample the culture of the Maasai, Pokot, Turkana, and Samburu, as village men and women invite you into their homes, sell traditional wares, show off their ritual dances, and introduce you to their lifestyle.

The tour concludes around 6:30pm with a drop-off at your Nairobi area accommodations.

Unforgettable!! - This tour was absolutely incredible from start to finish. My driver for the day, Dafton, arrived early to my hotel and was very professional. He was knowledgeable and a safe driver while navigating the Nairobi streets. He confidently and confidently navigated Ol Pejeta Reserve and created a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I saw dozens of animals, including elephant, lion, buffalo, zebra, warthog, chimpanzee, and more. The highlight was getting the opportunity to pet and feed Baraka, a black rhino! Thank you for a wonderful day and a wonderful tour, Dafton!

Great day at Ol Pejeta! - I would definitely recommend this experience - my guide, Kelvin, was really great and taught me a lot about what we saw on our trip to Ol Pejeta. Kelvin knew I was really excited about the rhinos, so made sure we saw as many rhinos as possible - it was a long drive for a day trip for Nairobi, but he went above and beyond to make sure that it was a fun day that exceeded my expectations!

Seeing the last two remains female northern white rhinos. - Our guide was Simon who was terrific. Getting to see the last two northern white female rhinos up close and personal. Our guide at the sanctuary was Joseph who was in the picture that was on the front page of National Geographic magazine in 2018 kissing Satan the last northern white male that had died. Joseph spent a lot of time with us going into all the details. Simon spent 14.5 hours with us explaining and driving in the crazy Kenya traffic.

Fantastic experience - Ol Pejeta was everything the reviews said it would be. The abundance of wildlife, the guides and the park itself are all anyone could hope for on a one day safari. The drive is a little farther than 3 and a half hours, more like 4 and a half but well worth it to get out of Nairobi for a day and really see Kenya. I imagine most reading the reviews wonder what animals there is a chance to experience, in short everything you could imagine except for a cheetah and everything is up close, like 20 feet away from the vehicle so no need for binoculars. Really a great day that I would recommend to anyone.

Good Tour but very long day - This was a good but not great tour. First, the drive was much longer than stated, at 4 1/2 hours each way, meaning 9 hours of driving round trip. And while the roads themselves are generally decent, there are constant speed bumps, meaning taking a nap is not possible. Second, my main reason for going was for the chimpanzee sanctuary and Stephen, the driver/guide, took me there around noon. That's close to when the chimps are fed lunch, so the chimps were not out to be seen. I only was able to see one chimp. But on the positive side, I was able to see a huge number of rhinos, including a trio of them that was followed by a hippo like the hippo was part of the family. That was fun to watch. I also saw a large number of lions and a lot of other animals.

Review - Great tour, Bonnie was a great guide, very knowledgeable. You don’t see that many Chimpanzees unless you pay the extra for the ‘behind the scenes’ of course I had travelled 4 hours so I paid the extra and did the feeding with the Chimpanzees which was totally worth the money!

Good place to visit if planned well - I had done safari in Tanzania and seen most of the wild life so I wasnt looking for a full safari when I visted Kenya. However, Ol Pejeta got my attention because it could be done in 1 day trip from Nairobi and offered a chance to see Rhino and Chimpanzee that I had not see before. My Pick up was ready on time. After about 3.5 hrs drive we arrived at Ol Pejeta and did a game drive where I saw a number of animals and some rare rescued Rhinos which completed my Big 5. My guide/driver kept telling me about what we saw. However, by the time we went to see Chimpanzees at around noon it was Chimpanzee's lunch time and they were away from the viewing. I was disappointed with this. Although I understand that wild life has no time-table and can not be for sure. But my understanding is in the sanctuary it must be a fixed time to give lunch to the animals, so instead of taking me for a game drive first, I may have been brought to the chimpanzee sanctuary first. Also, upon arriving I was first given a 10-15 min briefing by a resident guide which was helpful but if they knew that chimpanzees will be away for lunch soon, I should have been shown chimpanzees first and then briefed. I wish they can plan this better in terms of timing and to make sure that the visitors get to see everything they can. I could not even get a clear picture of a Chimpanzee, Felt a bit disappointed for a long day trip and still not able to see something that I wanted to, due to lack of planning, This tour is worth it if you are fine with a long drive and a quick safari, that I was looking for.
