Swimming Through Stars: A Night at La Parguera’s Biobay
Drawn by the allure of bioluminescent waters, I embarked on a journey to La Parguera in Lajas. The promise of swimming amidst glowing organisms was too enticing to resist.
Arrival at La Parguera
As a marine biologist with a penchant for adventure, I was thrilled to explore the La Parguera Sandbars and Biobay in Lajas. The journey began at the marina, where Glenda greeted us with a warm smile and a quick rundown of the rules. The location was a bit tricky to find, nestled in a seemingly no-drive zone, but the GPS directions were spot on. After signing a waiver, we made our way to the houseboat where the schooner awaited. A unique rule here: no shoes on the boat. It was a refreshing start, feeling the cool deck beneath my feet as we prepared to set sail.
Captain Fiol, our guide for the evening, was a delightful character, full of humor and stories. His presence set a lively tone for the adventure ahead. Our first stop was a marsh, where we were instructed to wash off any perfumes or lotions. This was crucial, as the delicate organisms in the biobay could react negatively to such substances. The water was invitingly clear and warm, perfect for a gentle wade as we donned our masks and took in the serene surroundings.
The Enchanting Biobay
After about 45 minutes of exploring the marsh, we set off towards the biobay, a place I had longed to visit. As a marine biologist, the prospect of interacting with bioluminescent organisms was exhilarating. The bay was shrouded in darkness, a necessary condition to witness the magical glow of these tiny creatures. We were instructed to move vigorously in the water, and as we did, the bioluminescence came to life, illuminating the water with a mesmerizing glow. It was like swimming through a sea of stars, each movement creating a cascade of light.
The experience was surreal, a perfect blend of science and wonder. The floating devices provided ensured our safety, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the moment. I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of nature, the delicate balance of ecosystems that allow such phenomena to exist. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with marine biology in the first place.
A Night to Remember
As the night drew to a close, we reluctantly made our way back to the dock. Captain Fiol navigated the waters with impressive skill, relying solely on his memory without any lighting equipment. It was a testament to his expertise and familiarity with the area. We were reminded to keep our cell phones off during the return journey, preserving the tranquility of the night.
Reflecting on the experience, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. The La Parguera Sandbars and Biobay offered a unique swim experience that was both calming and exhilarating. It was a perfect blend of adventure and serenity, a must-do for anyone visiting the island. I left with a renewed appreciation for the wonders of the ocean and a promise to return to this enchanting place in the future.
