Exploring the Wild Beauty of the Ord River: A Sunset Cruise Adventure
Drawn by the promise of breathtaking landscapes and rich history, I embarked on the Ord River Discoverer Cruise. Join me as I recount a day filled with adventure, wildlife, and a stunning East Kimberley sunset.
A Journey Through Time and Nature
As I embarked on the Ord River Discoverer Cruise, I was filled with anticipation. The East Kimberley region, with its rich history and breathtaking landscapes, had long been on my list of places to explore. The day began with a comfortable coach ride, taking us 70 kilometers across the vast Durack country to the Argyle Homestead Museum. This historic site, meticulously rebuilt stone by stone, offered a glimpse into the pioneering spirit of the Durack family. As someone who has spent years advocating for sustainable tourism, I was heartened to see the preservation of such a significant piece of history.
The journey continued to the dam wall of Lake Argyle, where the sheer scale of the Ord Top Dam left me in awe. The views were nothing short of spectacular, with the vast expanse of Lake Argyle stretching out before us. It was a reminder of the delicate balance between human ingenuity and the natural world, a theme that resonates deeply with my passion for conservation.
Embracing the Elements
Boarding the boat for our 55-kilometer cruise back to Kununurra, I was eager to experience the unique ecosystem of the Ord River. The first 15 kilometers were an exhilarating ride through the narrowest section of the river, a thrilling start to our journey. Despite the cold, which was unusual for the region, the excitement of the ride kept our spirits high. We wrapped ourselves in blankets, a small concession to the elements, as we became ‘birdos,’ eagerly spotting the diverse birdlife that thrives in this area.
The colder waters, a result of four days of overcast weather, meant that freshwater crocodiles were scarce. However, the occasional sighting of these elusive creatures added to the sense of adventure. As we ventured further upstream, we were treated to an afternoon tea of pumpkin scones and sticky date cake, accompanied by steaming cups of tea or coffee. It was a welcome respite, allowing us to warm up and reflect on the beauty surrounding us.
A Sunset to Remember
As the day drew to a close, we continued our journey towards Kununurra, making frequent stops to explore the hidden estuaries and observe the wildlife. The sighting of a rock wallaby was a delightful surprise, a testament to the rich biodiversity of the region. Each stop offered a new perspective, a chance to connect with the natural world in a meaningful way.
Finally, we reached the perfect spot to witness the East Kimberley sunset. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, a breathtaking finale to an unforgettable day. As we were dropped off at our accommodation, the Discovery Caravan Park, I couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of preserving such pristine environments. The Ord River Discoverer Cruise is more than just a tour; it’s a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our natural world, and the responsibility we all share in protecting it.
