Note: This tour spans over 56 miles and covers the highlights of Lake Louise & Moraine in 3-4 hours.

• Lake Louise - In just a few minutes, Lake Louise will come into view. Covering 222 acres and reaching depths of 230 feet, this lake offers plenty to admire. Long before the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived, the Stoney Nakoda fished here, calling it “Horâ Juthin Îmne,” meaning “Lake of Little Fishes.”

• Moraine Lake - We have arrived at Moraine Lake! The shuttle will drop us off in the parking area ahead. A popular activity here is hiking onto the rockpile that Wilcox climbed years ago. The entrance to this half-mile, 15-minute hiking trail is near the end of the parking lot. Follow the loop to the top of the rocks and enjoy the stunning views!

• Morant’s Curve - Named after Nicholas Morant, a staff photographer for the Canadian Pacific Railway, this spot became famous through his mid-20th-century photographs. These images were featured in nearly every promotional pamphlet and ad for Banff, drawing tourists eager to see what Morant captured through his lens.

• Castle Lookout Trailhead - Approaching soon is the Castle Lookout Trail. This 5-mile hike takes 3-4 hours to complete and is quite challenging. However, those who reach the top of Castle Mountain find the effort worthwhile! The trail offers views of the Bow River and the expansive Rockies. In fact, the end of Castle Lookout Trail is considered one of the best panoramic views in Banff National Park.

• Silverton Falls - Just ahead is the trail to Silverton Falls. This moderate, one-mile hike takes about half an hour. At the trail’s end, you’ll be treated to an incredible view of Bow Valley on one side and a 160-foot waterfall on the other! To visit the falls, turn left into the parking lot ahead.

• Moose Meadows - Another stunning hike is coming up shortly! This moderately challenging trail winds through Moose Meadows and leads to the springs known as the Ink Pots. It covers about five miles and takes around three hours, with an elevation gain of 1,100 feet that you’ll definitely feel!

• Johnston Canyon - Next is Johnston Canyon, the park’s most popular hike. This easy one-mile trail is a must-see. The canyon is named after a prospector who, despite not finding gold, mapped the canyon during his search!

• Hillsdale Meadow Viewpoint - Approaching is Hillsdale Meadow Viewpoint, offering 360-degree views of the Rockies and a meadow full of wildflowers! You’ll spot Pilot Mountain in the distance, the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks, and the Bow River. It’s an incredible vantage point. Pull into the turnout ahead if you’d like to visit, or continue straight.

• Backswamp Viewpoint - Coming up soon is Backswamp Viewpoint. Despite its unappealing name, this spot is a great place to stop! Backswamp Viewpoint offers a stunning view of Mount Bourgeau. The Bow River runs close to the lookout point, and if you’re lucky, you might see a train passing along the riverbank!

• Vermilion Lakes Viewpoint - Just ahead is the Vermilion Lakes viewpoint, featuring beautiful views of three small lakes nestled together. Beyond these lakes lies the town of Banff. This is a favorite spot for watching sunsets, sunrises, and wildlife! You might spot loons, buffleheads, and perhaps even an osprey. Visitors have also reported sightings of elk, mule deer, and the occasional moose at Vermilion Lakes.
