Lalibela - Day 1: Fly to Lalibela
Catch an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela (approximately 1 hour), where accommodations are arranged for one night. Although Lalibela is secluded in the Lasta Mountains at an elevation of 2,630 meters, it is home to Ethiopia’s premier attraction and one of the world’s most remarkable historical and religious sites. Between 1137 and 1270, several incredible rock-hewn churches were crafted in Lalibela; these are astonishing because they are not constructed from carved freestanding rocks, but rather from massive single blocks of stone revealed by the excavation of enormous pits. Spend two afternoons exploring these extraordinary churches that appear as if they have descended from the heavens. The Northern Group includes seven churches, a tomb, a chapel, and a sunken chapel. At the heart of this group is Bet Medhane Alem, measuring 33.5 meters by 23.5 meters, and reputed to be the largest rock-hewn church in the world.

Afterwards, visit the Yimrehane Kirstos Church, about 45 km from the town of Lalibela, renowned for its unique architectural style and historical significance.
