Lalibela to Axum

Northern Stelae Field - Catch a flight from Lalibela to Axum in the morning. Visit 1 hour in Axum and drive from Axum to Hawzien

Gheralta Rock - Drive from Axum to Hawzein via Adwa Finally drive to Hawzen for overnight via Gheralta plains. You can use the town as the base from which to visit the rock-hewn churches at Gheralta

Hawzien – Danakil

Erta Ale - We start our day by driving to Erta Ale via Mekele (which means smoky mountain in Afar language). Erta Ale ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and 1km square caldera at its summit. Erta Ale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake. It is 613 meters, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century.

We start early at 9:00 AM, drive to Dodom (at the base of Erta Ale). This is may be one of the roughest roads in the world. The 80 km distance may take about 6 hrs passing through changing the landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and occasional palm-lined oasis. After passing several small hamlets scattered here and there in this deserted land, you will arrive to Dodom camping site, located about 17km from Erta Ale.

Dinner will be served around 17:00 o’clock. After a short break, trek up to Ertale at 20:00 hours. Camels will be transporting all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and mat and water) to the rim of the volcano, where we spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. You will spend the night on top of the mountain, at the rim of the Volcano.

Salt Lake

Danakil Depression - Early Morning sunrise at the northern one corresponds to the main pit crater and walk 5 minutes for the southern and central pits could either corresponds to an ancient pit, or to a simple collapse structure. The main pit-crater, 200 m deep and 350 m across, is sub-circular and three-storied. The smaller southern pit is 65 m wide and about 100 m deep. Descend from Erta Ale around 9 am Dodom – Leave back to Dodom after an early breakfast, if possible at 07:00 o’clock.

You will reach the latest at 10:30 o’clock at the camp, where you will be relaxing. As soon as possible, drive to reach the mythical Lake Giulietti (or Lake Afrera)(optional may not be available during summer time), a saltwater lake located more than100 meters below sea level, in one of the deepest depressions of the planet. Because of the picturesque landscape, it is interesting to visit the salt flats where the Afar people obtain the salt by evaporating the water of the lake., continue to Erbiti and proceed Abaala/ Hamed Ela

Danakil/Dallol to Mekele

Erta Ale - Morning tour Drive to Ragad (Asebo), the place where the localities are mining salt. Look the activity of workers breaking salts from the ground, cutting into rectangular pieces and loading on camels. You drive ahead to Dallol and visit the difference landscape formed by volcanic activity, Dallol + Lake Assal + camel caravans. Excursion to Dallol (116 meters below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) colorful salts mining, visit Lake Assal, follow up camel caravans (No camel caravan on July, August, and early September) and walk with the Afar people. Drive back to Hamedela and proceed to Mekele. End of Danakil tour. Catch a flight back to Addis at 7:50 pm, arriving in Addis at 9:10 pm

First, female relatives dance and invite whipping from men who have recently been initiated; this shows their support of the initiate, and their scars give them a say on who they marry.
The boy must run back and forth twice across the backs of a row of bulls or castrated steers and is ridiculed if he fails.

ETT made the tour absolutely comfortable and easy! - Let me start by saying this tour was a great experience for myself and my husband. I had been in Ethiopia some 40 years ago and was very surprised and delighted to see how much had changed .. for a better life. Ethiopia is now a modern 21st century country which brings with it a new set of challenges to Ethiopian society. The tour itself was fascinating - a mix of old and new, a conflagration of tourist hot spots and small city and village sites. ETT made the tour absolutely easy and comfortable through its attention to all details and preparedness to go a bit further in ensuring our Ethiopia visit was not just a tour but an experience. Around every corner was a new adventure! It was comforting to be met by company representatives at each stage of the our tour and special mention must be given to the efforts of Sefora and her excellent tour guiding and to Mr Zenebe for his excellent driving - at no time did we feel unsafe in the journey between cities and landmarks. We wish you and your team well and we will be back.

Just wow - This was a great, small group, well planned tour, a wonderful way to see so many fantastic sights in Ethiopia like the Omo valley, The rock hewn churches of Lalibela, The danakil depression and Axum. Being in a Toyota 4wd car which is comfortable vehicle had not only the advantage of easy access to small towns and more out of the way places, it also encouraged good interaction between travellers. Highly recommend, great value for money.

Defined - I recommend ETT to all my friends and colleagues. Samrawit provided us with the best travel experiences we have ever had. We just tell her what we want a in her hands, and don't even think about anything again. These have been the most stress-free planned trips, and some of the most memorable, we have ever been on. If fact, although my wife and I never had a desire to visit Addis or Ethiopia, after taking a chance and booking the adventure with ETT we've returned to Ethiopia twice more, simply because of Samrawit and ETT. The personal attention we receive is unmatched anywhere. Samrawit and ETT receive my highest recommendation..."

Ethiopia, yes. ETT, no. - On day 2 when we were mistakenly sent to the Tigray cliff church, not Axum. A 200m high non-trivial free-climb along a cliff face with a ‘certain death as reward for any slip’ (their sales pitch) could not have been more inappropriate for a Type 2 diabetic with 2 children. None of us made it up, and the experience was traumatic. ETT offered a food tour, meal and day trip as compensation, but to actually go to Axum was another $150pp. No-one was there to meet us in Axum, so we made our way ETT’s office, got booked into a hotel, and were given a driver and guide the day. The next morning we met the driver again at the ETT office. He offered a day out to see the excavations at Yahe for $120. Cash. But this was a only a 15 min ‘tour’ - we were dumped back at the ETT office @10.30 am. Then we received multiple phone calls and texts from Elias demanding we pay for the trip a third time. Two of us got food poisoning in the Danakil, so ETT agreed to delay our flights to Omo by day. But they ‘forgot’, so on Xmas day we were stranded at Addis airport. Eventually ETT’s owner (Elias) put us up in their staff digs. Christmas dinner was a take away from Pizza Hut and being hounded by stray dogs in the backstreets of Addis. The promised cookery course, day trip and meal never materialised. Much like ETT’s airport pick-ups. What should have been the holiday of a lifetime was instead a nightmarish experience of dealing with unresponsive, dishonest, incompetent cockwombles; ETT.
