This exclusive 2-day journey is a supervised exploration of 11 individual rock-carved churches, created in the 12th century. At a time when Jerusalem was unreachable, these churches in Lalibela were constructed as a New Jerusalem.
Visitors will be fetched from the airport and checked into their hotel for independent lunch, before being escorted to the Northern group of churches, followed by a visit to a museum.
The second day embarks with a 42-kilometer venture to the Yimrehane Krestos church, established within a cave. This magnificent church made from wood and stone is older than the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela by eight decades. At the back of the cave, you can observe the centuries-old mummified remains of 5,500 pilgrims.
A nearby village visit is optional as the visitor returns to Lalibela for lunch at their hotel and the afternoon excursion of the Southeastern cluster of churches and Bet Giyorgis (St. George), built in homage to St. George, Ethiopia’s patron saint.
Visitors will be collected the following morning post-breakfast and transported to the airport.
