Into the Heart of the Jungle

The moment I set foot in Lamas, I felt the pulse of the Amazon beating beneath my feet. The air was thick with the scent of earth and foliage, a reminder of the vibrant life that thrives in this part of the world. As a biologist and environmental activist, I was eager to explore the lush forests and rivers that make this region so unique. The Tarapoto Adventure promised an immersive experience, and it did not disappoint.

Our journey began with a 90-minute trek along the Cumbaza River. The path was a tapestry of green, with towering trees and wild plants creating a canopy overhead. We crossed the river four times, each crossing a new adventure as the water rushed around our ankles. The natural pools that dotted the riverbed were irresistible, inviting us to pause and take a refreshing dip. It was a reminder of the simple joys that nature offers, a chance to connect with the world in its purest form.

A Dance with Waterfalls

The highlight of our trek was undoubtedly the Ahuashiyacu Falls. Located 14 kilometers from Tarapoto, the falls are a testament to the raw beauty of the Amazon. As we approached, the sound of cascading water grew louder, a symphony of nature that drew us in. The waterfall, with its 35-meter drop, was a sight to behold. Surrounded by lush vegetation, it felt like a hidden paradise, untouched by the modern world.

The pool at the base of the falls was a mosaic of blues and greens, its depths varying to accommodate both children and adults. I couldn’t resist the urge to dive in, the cool water a welcome relief from the heat of the jungle. As I swam, I marveled at the intricate ecosystem that surrounded me, a reminder of the delicate balance that sustains life in the Amazon.

Embracing the Culture of Lamas

Beyond the natural wonders, the cultural richness of Lamas added another layer to the adventure. The town is a living museum, where ancestral traditions and customs are preserved with pride. The architecture, with its ocher earth houses, tells a story of resilience and adaptation. Visiting the Plaza de Armas and the Lamas Castle, I was struck by the harmony between the people and their environment.

The local community’s commitment to preserving their heritage resonated with my own passion for conservation. It was a reminder that protecting our natural world is not just about preserving landscapes, but also about honoring the cultures that have coexisted with these ecosystems for centuries. As I left Lamas, I carried with me a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by the people and the land that had welcomed me so warmly.
