Set off for Landmannalaugar, a mesmerizing location within Iceland’s expansive Highlands. This destination is renowned for its stunning vistas, characterized by vividly colored rhyolite mountains, thermal springs, extensive lava fields and adventurous hikes.
Both the lava expanses and rhyolite peaks owe their existence to millennia of volcanic happenings. The Laugahraun lava field originated from a 1477 volcanic eruption, leaving behind a large area of unusual black obsidian, known for its sleek, sharp edges and distinctive aesthetic. This obsidian was featured in the television series Game of Thrones, under the moniker of “Dragon Glass”. Rhyolite is a variant of volcanic rock, consisting of silica and quartz, with additional minerals such as sulphur and iron contributing to the mountain’s vivid chromaticity. A prime example is Brennisteinsalda, or “the Sulphur Wave”.
Don’t neglect to pack your swimming attire and a towel for the journey!
The extraordinary natural spectacle and intrinsic geological particularities of this region will leave an indelible impression, resulting in unforgettable memories.
