A New Year Among the Peaks

As the final days of 2023 approached, I found myself yearning for an experience that would not only mark the end of a year but also the beginning of a new chapter. The Andes Horseback Adventure seemed to call out to me, promising a journey through the heart of the Andes, where the natural world and cultural heritage intertwine in a dance as old as the mountains themselves.

Arriving in Las Loicas, I was greeted by the crisp mountain air and the warm camaraderie of fellow adventurers. Our journey began with a shared meal at the Mapicsa Accommodation, a small mountain hostel that felt like a home away from home. As we prepared for our ascent, the anticipation was palpable. The horses, gentle and sure-footed, seemed to understand the significance of the journey ahead.

The first day took us to Camp Mayllin, nestled at 1900 meters above sea level. As we rode through the ancient trails, I couldn’t help but reflect on the gauchos who had traversed these paths for centuries. The landscape, with its towering peaks and deep valleys, was a testament to the enduring spirit of the Andes. That night, as we gathered around the campfire, I felt a profound connection to the land and its history.

The Heart of the Andes

The following days were a symphony of breathtaking vistas and cultural exchanges. Our journey to the Vilches Post, at 2700 meters, was a highlight. The trail, flanked by vertical walls reaching 4000 meters, was both daunting and awe-inspiring. Here, the mountains seemed to whisper their secrets, stories of ancient seas and the forces that shaped this rugged terrain.

Reaching the Milestone Pichi Trolon, the border between Argentina and Chile, was a moment of reflection. Standing at 3400 meters, I was struck by the beauty and vastness of the mountain range. It was a place where borders seemed to dissolve, and the only boundaries were those of the natural world.

Throughout the journey, the hospitality of our hosts was unwavering. Each meal was a celebration of local flavors, a testament to the rich culinary traditions of the region. The food, prepared with care and shared with new friends, was a reminder of the universal language of hospitality.

A Journey to Remember

As our adventure drew to a close, we made our way to Los Alamos, crossing vast valleys of volcanic sand. The landscape, shaped by time and the elements, was a reminder of the ever-changing nature of the world. Here, we prepared our final meal together, a feast that celebrated not only the journey but also the bonds we had formed along the way.

Returning to Las Loicas, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experience. The Andes Horseback Adventure had offered more than just a journey through the mountains; it had provided a window into a world where nature and culture exist in harmony. As I bid farewell to my fellow travelers, I carried with me memories of landscapes that will forever remain etched in my mind.
