Sailing into Serenity: A Day on Martinique’s Atlantic Coast
Eager to explore the legends and landscapes of Martinique’s Atlantic coast, I embarked on a day trip with Margaret Mongin and her crew. The promise of discovering Josephine’s Bath and savoring Creole flavors made for an unforgettable adventure.
Setting Sail on the Atlantic Coast
The sun was just beginning to rise as I made my way to the dock in Le François, ready to embark on a day of exploration and adventure. The promise of discovering the Atlantic coast’s beauty had me buzzing with excitement. As a former professional surfer, the ocean has always been my playground, and today, I was eager to dive into the legends and landscapes of Martinique’s famed Josephine’s Bath.
Our small group was greeted by Margaret Mongin and her crew, including the ever-smiling Captain Mamadou. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable day. We set off at 9 a.m., navigating through the mangroves and learning about the islets of du François. The gentle sway of the boat and the salty breeze were a reminder of why I love island life so much.
Discovering Josephine’s Bath
As we approached the Bath of Josephine, the water transformed into a mesmerizing shade of turquoise, bordered by a strip of white sand. This natural wonder, nestled between islet Thierry and islet Oscar, was a sight to behold. We anchored and waded into the warm, shallow waters, where the traditional baptism of rum awaited us. With our feet in the water, we toasted to the beauty of the Caribbean and the shared experience of our small group.
The legends surrounding Josephine’s Bath added a layer of mystique to the experience. Margaret shared stories of the past, weaving tales of history and folklore that brought the place to life. It was a moment of connection, not just with the land but with each other, as we laughed and shared our own stories.
A Feast on Îlet Oscar
By midday, our appetites were piqued, and we made our way to Îlet Oscar for a Creole feast. The spread was a vibrant display of local flavors, with lobster taking center stage. As we dined, the camaraderie among our group grew stronger, fueled by the delicious food and the shared joy of discovery.
Captain Mamadou’s humor kept us entertained, his laughter infectious as we savored every bite. The day was a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, a testament to the care and passion Margaret and her team put into creating such a memorable experience.
As we sailed back to Le François, the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a fitting end to a day that had been as vibrant and colorful as the island itself. I left with a heart full of gratitude and a promise to return, eager to relive the magic of Martinique’s Atlantic coast.
