Bora Bora Bliss: A Day of Stingrays, Sharks, and Scenic Feasts
When the opportunity to swim with stingrays and sharks in Bora Bora presented itself, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount a day filled with oceanic wonders, island tunes, and a feast on a private motu.
Setting Sail on a Bora Bora Adventure
The sun was just beginning to rise over the Leeward Islands as I found myself standing on the dock of our resort, ready to embark on a day that promised to be nothing short of magical. The Bora Bora Lagoon Tour was calling my name, and I was eager to answer. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the allure of swimming with stingrays and sharks in the crystal-clear waters of Bora Bora was irresistible.
Our guide, Ray, greeted us with a warm smile and a cooler full of drinks, setting the tone for a day of relaxation and adventure. As we cruised across the lagoon, Ray’s ukulele tunes and stories about the island’s natural wonders filled the air, creating a soundtrack that perfectly matched the stunning scenery around us.
Dancing with Stingrays and Sharks
Our first stop was a shallow area where the water was so clear, it felt like we were floating on air. Here, we met the stars of the show: the stingrays. These gentle creatures glided gracefully around us, and to my surprise, they seemed to enjoy a good cuddle. Ray introduced us to his “girls,” and I couldn’t help but laugh as one of them snuggled up to me, their soft skin brushing against mine.
Next, we ventured into deeper waters, where a group of black-tipped sharks awaited. Despite their reputation, these sharks were shy and elegant, moving through the water with a quiet grace. Swimming alongside them was a surreal experience, one that reminded me of the countless hours I’ve spent riding waves and feeling at one with the ocean.
A Feast on a Private Motu
After our underwater adventures, we made our way to a private motu for lunch. The tables were set up in the shallow waters, offering a panoramic view of the majestic Otemanu mountain on one side and the vast Pacific Ocean on the other. The buffet was a feast for the senses, with local dishes that tantalized the taste buds and a coconut husking demonstration that was as entertaining as it was informative.
As I sat there, savoring the flavors of the island and the company of fellow travelers, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique and beautiful part of the world. The day was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, a reminder of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
Ray and his crew, including the ever-helpful Kevin, made the day unforgettable. Their passion for the island and its natural wonders was infectious, and I left the tour with a newfound appreciation for the vibrant ecosystem of Bora Bora. If you’re ever in the Leeward Islands, I highly recommend setting sail on this incredible journey. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after the sun has set on the horizon.
