Experience the stunning view over Ålesund from Aksla mountain. At the viewpoint, you will be captivated by the beautiful city. Here, you can enjoy a 360-degree view. The weather is ever-changing, yet the scenery remains beautiful in all conditions. The view includes surrounding islands, passing boats, and snow-capped mountains. As night falls, the twinkling lights in the houses create a magical atmosphere, and the sunsets are spectacular as the sun slowly dips into the sea, turning everything orange. Sunrises illuminate the houses one by one. Ålesund is enchanting at any time of day. -
Alesund - Driving time: 15 minutes
Waldehuset was the only house in the eastern part of the town that survived the great fire on January 23, 1904. The entire town of Ålesund was ablaze. Waldehuset, situated amidst a large area of wooden houses, was the sole structure to remain unscathed.
Come and hear the incredible story of the Miracle House in Aalesund. -
Alesund - Driving time: 10 minutes
We drive through the city, exploring many streets, admiring the beautiful houses, and crossing the famous Hellebroen to the other side of the city. The picturesque Brosundet divides the city, leading out to the lighthouse.
On the night of January 23, 1904, a devastating fire swept through Ålesund, destroying 850 houses and leaving 10,000 people homeless in just 16 hours. By 1907, most of the town center had been rebuilt. The architects were inspired by both national romantic influences and the modern Art Nouveau style of the time. The buildings feature towers, spires, and imaginative, colorful ornaments. It’s important to look up in the streets to appreciate the unique details. Ålesund is renowned for its distinctive architecture and holds a special place in both Norwegian and international architectural history. -
Brosundet i Alesund - Driving time: 10 minutes
Molja lighthouse stands at the end of the pier at Ålesund’s entrance. The pier dates back to 1950, while the current lighthouse was built in 1937 and automated in 1982. Lighthouses have been here since 1858.
Today, the lighthouse has been transformed into a hotel room with room service. Regardless of the weather, the sunsets here are mesmerizing.
This part of Ålesund was where fishing boats arrived. The rich fishing grounds lie just beyond. In the 1950s, Brosundet was bustling with fishing boats seeking shelter or delivering their catch. The lighthouse guided them safely, as well as boats passing by Ålesund.
There are also restroom facilities available here. -
Aalesund Church - Driving time: 10 minutes
Aalesund’s beautiful church was constructed in 1909. The original church, built in 1854, was destroyed in the 1904 fire. The current church seats 800 people. The stone used comes from areas around Kristiansund, north of Aalesund. The church is located on Apøya, on a hill overlooking the city, and can be both seen and heard from most parts of the city. -
Alnes - Driving time: 20 minutes
Visit the viewpoint to admire the beautiful Alnes and Alnes lighthouse. The lighthouse is nestled among houses, with high mountains on one side and the vast open sea on the other. The natural beauty is breathtaking. The proximity to the sea allows you to hear the fresh sea breeze. Waves crash over the rocks, some of which are enormous, sparking curiosity about their origins. The nature here is pristine. Alnes lighthouse now limits entry to 8 people at a time, and only at specific times. Visitors can admire the magnificent lighthouse from the outside but cannot enter. -
Alnes Lighthouse - Driving time: 5 minutes
We drive along the high stone wall that protects the houses from large waves during bad weather. The narrow road winds around the island, revealing the landscape. Feel the fresh sea air as you step outside. It’s stunning here.
The lighthouse has been operational for boats and ships at Alnes since 1853. Her Majesty the Queen of Norway inaugurated the new visitor center at Alnes Lighthouse on October 7, 2016. The center features an exciting new signal building, subtly integrated into the terrain.
To harmonize with the surroundings and existing structures, much of the 700 square meter building is built into the ground.
Artists Ørnulf Opdahl and Sidsel Colbjørnsen, who reside locally, have donated an art collection for a permanent exhibition. The Queen has visited many times, observed the progress, and praised this beautiful, weather-resistant place. -
Giske Kirke - Driving time: 10 minutes
GISKE is known as Norway’s birthplace.
It was home to one of Norway’s most powerful families, the Giske family, for centuries. Four brothers from this family were close to the King of Norway. Giske medieval church was built in 1130 as a family chapel for the Giske descendants of Torberg Arnason. His daughter Tora became Queen of Norway. The church seats approximately 130 people and is the oldest in this part of Norway, nearly 900 years old. It is the only church in Norway made entirely of marble, sourced from other parts of Norway and Italy. The architecture was inspired by European church buildings. Small crosses were carved on the outer walls around 1300 by pilgrims, which are still visible today. -
Alesund - Driving time back to the cruise pier: 20 minutes, marking the end of the tour. A fantastic film about the Ålesund city fire and the beautiful Norwegian nature, accompanied by pleasant music, will be shown on the bus as we travel through the underwater tunnels.
