Arrive in Bayan-Olgii Province, drive to Altai Mountains
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Welcome to Olgii, the land of the magnificent Altai Mountains and the last stronghold of nomadic eagle hunters! At the airport, our local support team will greet you, including an English-speaking tour guide, a local driver with an off-road vehicle, and our personal expedition cook. Today, we will drive to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, a journey of about six hours. Relish the breathtaking Altai Mountains. Upon arrival, we will set up camp and prepare for the next day’s trek.
Trekking to the Base camp
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - After breakfast, please pack your belongings and get ready for trekking. During the trip, camels will transport all baggage and camping equipment. You only need to carry essentials like a lunchbox, water, a waterproof jacket, and other trekking necessities. Today, we will trek to the Base camp, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Altai Mountains, including the highest peak, Mt. Khuiten, and the Potanin glacier. Enjoy your day!
Climb to the Malchin Peak 4050m / 13287f
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, we will climb Malchin Peak, a favorite among travelers, offering a stunning view of the surrounding nature. The mountain is notable for being located right on the border between Russia and Mongolia. Climbing the mountain does not require special gear, but good waterproof hiking boots are necessary. Near the top, there is snow, while the rest of the terrain is mainly rocky. The total climb takes around six to seven hours. Return to camp.
Go back to the ranger station
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, we will trek back to the National Park entrance, taking a different, more scenic trail along the White River. The river’s white color is due to mineral dust, making it undrinkable. Enjoy the stunning white river with snow-capped mountains in the background. Stay at the campsite.
Trekking to the Khar- Salaa
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - After breakfast, we will trek to Khar Salaa, which means “Black Valley.” The White River Valley and Black Valley are neighboring valleys inhabited by nomadic Tuvan people, who have their own language and culture. They are known for their Shamanistic beliefs and rituals. Today, we will visit a Tuvan family and learn more about these fascinating people.
Trek into Bear Valley and Takhilt Pass
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Bear Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in the national park, accessible only a few months a year. First, we need to cross the highest Takhilt Pass, where you will experience steep, high trails, and then descend into Bear Valley. We will need to cross several rivers, which have no bridges, so we will either cross barefoot or make long jumps. Our guide will choose the safest route. Enjoy the wild nature!
Camp by the Khoton Lake
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, we will hike for about three to four hours and meet the driver at the end of the valley. Say “goodbye” to the camel herders and continue by car. The drive takes about two hours, leading to a beautiful spot where you can swim. There is also Biluu Hill, where you can enjoy the surrounding nature once you climb to the top. Khoton Lake is a pristine mountain lake with a stunning view.
Waterfall Valley trek
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, you can wake up at your leisure. After lunch, we will migrate to the next location, a half-hour drive away. Please welcome the nomadic Kazakh eagle hunter’s family. Meet the local herders and be a guest of the family. In the afternoon, we will take a three-hour hike in Waterfall Valley, where you can enjoy a stunning valley with waterfalls. Return to the family and stay in a traditional yurt. You will have the opportunity to learn more about their traditions.
