The Call of the Rapids

As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, but the call of the Pacuare River was something I couldn’t resist. Known as one of the most beautiful rivers in Costa Rica, the promise of rafting through its Class III-IV rapids was too tempting to pass up. My wife and I, always on the lookout for our next adventure, decided to take a break from the ocean and head inland for a change.

The day began early, with a pickup from our hotel in San Jose. The drive to Turrialba was a scenic journey through lush landscapes, setting the tone for the day ahead. After a hearty Costa Rican breakfast, we arrived at Tres Equis, where our guide, Robertillo, awaited us with a mischievous grin and a twinkle in his eye. His infectious energy was the perfect prelude to the adventure that lay ahead.

Riding the Wild Waters

With life jackets secured and paddles in hand, we embarked on our journey down the Pacuare River. The initial calm of the river was deceptive, as the rapids soon began to roar around us. Robertillo, our guide, was a master of his craft, expertly navigating the tumultuous waters while keeping us entertained with his lively stories and jokes.

The thrill of the rapids was exhilarating, a perfect blend of adrenaline and awe as we maneuvered through the churning waters. The river’s beauty was unparalleled, with cascading waterfalls and vibrant flora lining the banks. We were fortunate enough to spot a coati, along with a variety of birds and butterflies, adding to the magic of the experience.

A Perfect Day in Paradise

After three hours of heart-pounding adventure, we emerged from the river, exhilarated and hungry. Lunch was a delightful affair, a chance to relax and savor the flavors of Costa Rica while recounting the day’s adventures with fellow rafters.

Reflecting on the experience, I realized that the Pacuare River offered a unique blend of excitement and tranquility, a perfect complement to the ocean’s waves that I know so well. It’s a must-do for anyone visiting Costa Rica, especially those staying in and around San Jose. The combination of natural beauty, thrilling rapids, and the camaraderie of the group made it an unforgettable day.
