From Surf to Saddle: Exploring Costa Rica’s Wild Side on Horseback

Trading my surfboard for a saddle, I ventured into the heart of Costa Rica’s wildlife and culture on horseback. Join me as I explore the lush trails and stunning beaches of Limon, guided by the ever-knowledgeable Jose C.

A Journey to Remember: From Waves to Trails

As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, but this time, I decided to trade my surfboard for a saddle. The allure of exploring Costa Rica’s wildlife and culture on horseback was too tempting to resist. My wife and I, always on the lookout for new adventures, found ourselves in Limon, ready to embark on the Cahuita Horseback Adventure.

Our guide, Jose C, greeted us with a warm smile and a sign bearing our names. We hopped into a private van, complete with air conditioning and bottled water—a small luxury that made the hour-long drive to the horse stable and national forest a breeze. Along the way, Jose’s engaging stories and local insights kept us entertained, and a quick stop at a roadside fruit stand introduced us to the vibrant flavors of Costa Rican fruits.

Into the Heart of the Jungle

Upon arrival, we split into two groups. My wife and I opted to explore the national forest first, while our friends saddled up for the horseback ride. The forest trail was an easy walk, but it was teeming with life. Monkeys swung from the trees, sloths lounged lazily on branches, and toucans flashed their colorful beaks. It was a reminder of the rich biodiversity that makes Costa Rica a paradise for nature lovers.

The trail was a sensory delight, with the sounds of the jungle providing a natural soundtrack to our adventure. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, the nearby restaurants and shops offered a chance to relax and soak in the local culture. But for us, the call of the wild was irresistible.

Riding the Waves of the Beach

After our forest trek, it was time to experience the thrill of horseback riding along the beach. The first half of the ride was a gentle trot, allowing us to take in the stunning coastal views and the rhythmic sound of the waves. But as we reached the open stretch of Playa Negra, the pace quickened.

Racing down the beach on horseback was exhilarating, a different kind of rush from surfing but equally thrilling. The wind in our hair and the spray of the ocean on our faces made for an unforgettable experience. As the ride came to an end, we were treated to fresh watermelon and pineapple, a refreshing end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on the adventure, I realized that while the waves will always call me back, there’s something magical about exploring the land from a different perspective. The Cahuita Horseback Adventure offered a unique blend of relaxation and excitement, and I can’t wait to return to Limon for another ride through its natural wonders.
