Visitors can embark on the crater overlook trail, a 0.5 km path that takes about 10 minutes each way. A tour guide will share insights into the area’s biodiversity and the volcano’s history. This park is home to numerous cloud forest birds, including hummingbirds, tanagers, flycatchers, toucanets, Costa Rica’s national bird, the clay-colored robin, and the renowned resplendent quetzal. Since 2019, Poás Volcano has experienced eruptions, prompting the government to implement safety measures. Currently, the crater overlook trail is the only accessible walking path.
- La Paz Waterfall Gardens - Situated on the slopes of Poás Volcano, La Paz Waterfall is a biodiversity-rich area due to its elevation, ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 feet, which supports both cloud and rainforests. Visitors can expect a truly enchanting experience, featuring the world’s largest butterfly observatory, gardens for hummingbirds and bromeliads, a serpentarium, a frog pond, and five stunning waterfalls.
- Hacienda Alsacia Starbucks Coffee Farm - Located in Costa Rica, Hacienda Alsacia is Starbucks’ first and only coffee farm, boasting over 800,000 coffee trees across 240 hectares on the slopes of Poás Volcano. Acquired in 2013, the farm hosts the Starbucks Costa Rica Coffee Farmer Support Center, established in 2004 and one of ten globally, along with Starbucks’ Global Research and Development team.
The farm’s mission is to address various challenges faced by coffee-growing communities worldwide, such as climate change, an aging agricultural workforce, and coffee rust. It achieves this by developing new coffee varieties resistant to diseases and climate changes, modeling and sharing best farming practices with other Starbucks Farmer Support Centers, assisting farmers in evaluating the taste and quality of their coffee, and serving as a hub for coffee experts and Starbucks partners (employees).
