The wooden churches in the southern region of Little Poland are remarkable representations of the diverse aspects of medieval church construction norms in Roman Catholic traditions. These structures were erected using the horizontal log method, a technique widespread in eastern and northern Europe since the Medieval period.
The architectural style of these wooden churches, unique to the area, emerged in the late sixteenth century, during the late Middle Ages. They initially featured Gothic ornamentation and polychrome detailing. However, due to their timber framework, their formation, overall structure, and ambiance markedly contrast from Gothic architecture or Polish Gothic made from stone or brick. Subsequent constructions reflect the Rococo and Baroque decorative influences. These Roman Catholic churches’ design is significantly impacted by the region’s Greco-Catholic and Orthodox influences.
