Alfama is not only one of the oldest and most picturesque districts in Lisbon, but it was also one of the few neighborhoods that survived the 1755 earthquake. As a result, the city has retained its charming, familial atmosphere. Interestingly, the name of this neighborhood is derived from the Arabic ‘Al-hamma,’ which means ‘hot fountains’ or ‘baths.’

Adorned with beautiful ‘azulejos,’ the steep, winding alleys of this area offer stunning views of a sea of terracotta roofs and the Tagus River. The scents of traditional Portuguese cuisine, the sounds of Fado music, and the chatter of elderly Portuguese locals all contribute to making this neighborhood one of the most authentic in Lisbon!
