Alfama is not only one of the oldest and most picturesque districts in Lisbon, but it was also one of the few neighborhoods that survived the 1755 earthquake. As a result, the city has retained its charming, familial atmosphere. Interestingly, the name of this neighborhood is derived from the Arabic ‘Al-hamma,’ which means ‘hot fountains’ or ‘baths.’

Adorned with beautiful ‘azulejos,’ the steep, winding alleys of this area offer stunning views of a sea of terracotta roofs and the Tagus River.
